Singapore has invoked its Online Criminal Harms Act (OCHA) to block access to a set of social media posts flagged as part of an online disinformation campaign targeting the country’s Indian community.
According to official sources, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs and the police issued directives to platforms including YouTube, Facebook, and X, requiring them to restrict local access to 14 specific posts and videos.
Content targeted by authorities
Authorities said the flagged material is linked to a coordinated online campaign that has circulated since May across multiple platforms. The content reportedly uses selectively edited visuals from crowded areas in Little India and footage of Hindu religious gatherings to create a misleading narrative about Singapore’s demographic balance.
Officials stated that the posts contain false claims about the Indian community’s representation in public life and distort Singapore’s multiracial framework. They warned that such content could inflame ethnic sensitivities and undermine social cohesion.
Action under Online Criminal Harms Act
Under OCHA, Singapore authorities can direct online platforms to restrict access to harmful or disruptive content. In this case, orders were issued to limit visibility of the identified posts for users within Singapore. Officials said the move was necessary to curb the spread of misleading and potentially divisive material online.
Concerns over coordinated misinformation
Government sources said the campaign appears to involve coordinated amplification across digital platforms, with content later spreading to mainstream social media. Authorities described such activity as part of broader misinformation efforts that can exploit ethnic narratives to create social tension in diverse societies.
Government emphasises social harmony
Officials reiterated Singapore’s commitment to its multiracial framework and urged the public to verify information before sharing unverified online content. They also warned that further regulatory action may be taken if required to protect public order and maintain social harmony.
