A second migrant worker injured in the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district has died during treatment, taking the death toll in the incident to two, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as Bupinder Kumar. Another labourer, Deepak, had earlier succumbed to his injuries. A third worker from Chhattisgarh remains hospitalised and is undergoing treatment. The attack took place in the Kellam area of Kulgam, where unidentified terrorists opened fire on migrant labourers employed at a brick kiln. After carrying out the shooting, the attackers fled the scene.
Security forces and Jammu and Kashmir Police immediately launched a cordon-and-search operation in the area to trace those responsible. Investigators said The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Condemning the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha spoke with Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat and other senior security officials, directing them to intensify anti-terror operations and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
In a post on X, Sinha extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured worker. He said the Jammu and Kashmir administration and the nation stand in solidarity with the victims’ families.
The attack has once again raised concerns over the targeting of migrant workers and other civilians in Jammu and Kashmir. Security forces have stepped up operations in the region in recent years following a series of attacks on non-local residents, pilgrims and civilians, including the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people.
