Iran Takes Swipe at Trump Over Hormuz Threat, Tells Him to ‘Worry About His Own Safety’
Iran has mocked US President Donald Trump over his threat to take control of the Strait of Hormuz, with a senior Iranian lawmaker telling him to focus on his own security instead of making what he called “endless bluffs.” Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of Iran’s Parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, made the remarks on Sunday, a day after Trump said the US Navy was maintaining a full blockade of the strategic waterway.
“The US President ought to worry about his own security rather than his endless bluffing regarding the Strait of Hormuz,” Azizi wrote on X, referring to reports that Trump was transported in a catering truck during a recent security operation.
Iran’s ‘Food Truck’ Jibe at Trump
Azizi’s remark referred to reports surrounding Trump’s departure from Ankara after the NATO summit in July.
According to The Washington Post, Trump was initially seen boarding a Boeing 747-8 before being moved to a smaller C-32A military aircraft. He was reportedly transported across the airport in a catering truck as part of the security operation, while the larger aircraft served as a possible decoy. Trump later confirmed that the Secret Service and US military had advised him to switch aircraft. However, details of the reported Iranian assassination threat have not been publicly established.
Trump’s Strait of Hormuz Threat
Trump has escalated his rhetoric over the strategically vital waterway amid rising tensions with Iran. Speaking in New York, he said that after the US had “completely defeated Iran,” he would declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory. Trump also claimed that the US Navy was maintaining a full blockade of the strait.
The waterway, located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, is one of the world’s most important energy routes and carries a significant portion of global seaborne oil and gas shipments.
Tehran Rejects US Territorial Claim
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi dismissed Trump’s suggestion that Washington could take control of the strait. He said the waterway could not be seized through a tweet, aircraft carrier, executive order or campaign speech, adding that Iran was neither afraid of threats nor intimidated by displays of military power.
A White House official, meanwhile, told US media that Trump was joking when he spoke about declaring the Strait of Hormuz US territory.
