Marjorie Taylor Greene Claims Trump Administration Weighing Nuclear Option Against Iran

Former US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has claimed that senior Trump administration officials are discussing the possibility of using nuclear weapons against Iran, but she has provided no evidence to substantiate the allegation.

In a post on X on Sunday, Greene said nuclear weapons were being discussed during strategy meetings and insisted that her claim was based on information she knew rather than speculation.

Greene, a vocal critic of US military involvement in Iran, warned that any nuclear attack could escalate the conflict into a much broader global confrontation. She called on Americans to oppose the use of nuclear weapons and urged an immediate end to the war.

However, the claim has not been independently verified. No public US government statement or official document confirming that a nuclear strike against Iran is being considered has been identified.

US Intelligence Assessments on Iran

Previous US intelligence assessments have distinguished between Iran’s nuclear capabilities and an active nuclear weapons programme.

The 2025 Annual Threat Assessment said Iran was not building a nuclear weapon and that then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had not reauthorised the weapons programme that was suspended in 2003.

The 2026 assessment said that before Operation Epic Fury, Iran had continued developing increasingly capable missile systems and had failed to meet some of its nuclear obligations to the International Atomic Energy Agency. US intelligence agencies said they were monitoring Iran’s weapons-related capabilities and activities following the operation.

In March, US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme had been “obliterated” and that US intelligence was continuing to monitor whether Iran’s leadership would authorise a nuclear weapons programme.

Greene Warns of Nuclear Consequences

Greene invoked the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, highlighting the devastating human consequences of nuclear warfare. She argued that the immediate destruction and long-term effects of radiation demonstrated why nuclear weapons should never be used again.

Greene also accused the Trump administration of disregarding intelligence assessments about Iran’s nuclear programme and criticised the US military campaign against Tehran. She questioned President Donald Trump’s statements about the conflict and the Strait of Hormuz, while warning that a nuclear strike could lead to a wider war, severe economic disruption and unprecedented civilian suffering.

Allegation Remains Unconfirmed

Greene concluded her statement by urging Americans to speak out against any potential use of nuclear weapons and calling for an end to the conflict. Her remarks come as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high. However, her claim that US officials are actively discussing a nuclear strike against Iran remains unverified, and no publicly available evidence has confirmed the allegation.
