Starlink Renews India Push, Seeks Fresh Approvals For Satellite Internet And D2D Service
Elon Musk’s Starlink has reportedly renewed its efforts to secure the final regulatory clearances needed to launch satellite internet services in India. The SpaceX-owned company has faced repeated delays over regulatory and security concerns. It has now reportedly submitted a fresh application seeking approval for its Gen 2 satellite constellation, which could deliver higher internet speeds and enable direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity.
According to sources cited by The Economic Times, Starlink is seeking permission to operate around 30,000 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO).
Starlink’s Direct-To-Device Technology Explained
Starlink’s D2D technology is designed to connect compatible smartphones directly to satellites, potentially eliminating the need for a separate satellite terminal for certain services. The technology could prove especially useful in remote and rural locations where conventional mobile networks are weak or unavailable.
Starlink has already introduced D2D connectivity in some markets. If approved in India, the technology could eventually allow compatible phones to access satellite-based connectivity in areas beyond the reach of traditional networks.
However, Starlink would have to comply with India’s regulatory and security requirements, which could determine how the service is deployed and what features are available.
Security Concerns Delayed Starlink’s India Entry
Although Starlink secured spectrum allocation in India last year, its commercial launch has remained pending amid scrutiny of its operations and security arrangements. A Bloomberg report in June 2026 said Indian officials were examining security concerns surrounding satellite communications, including reports that Starlink equipment had been used in Iran even though the service was not officially authorised there.
Starlink rejected the allegations and maintained that it remained engaged with the Indian government.
“Starlink remains in active and productive discussions with the Government of India contrary to misleading stories based upon unsubstantiated claims from anonymous sources,” Lauren Dreyer, vice-president of Starlink Business Operations, said in a post on X.
Why India Is Important For Starlink
India’s large population and geographically diverse terrain make it a significant potential market for satellite internet. Providing reliable mobile connectivity in mountainous, remote and sparsely populated areas can be difficult because building conventional telecom infrastructure requires substantial investment.
Starlink’s satellite broadband service, along with its emerging D2D technology, could help bridge some of these connectivity gaps.
The latest application marks another attempt by Musk’s company to enter the Indian market. However, Starlink’s launch timeline will ultimately depend on the remaining approvals and conditions imposed by Indian authorities.
