Bangladesh: Retired Hindu Teacher, Wife and Children Found Dead in Locked Home
A retired Hindu schoolteacher, his wife and their two children were found dead inside their locked residence in Rangpur, Bangladesh, in a case that has left police investigating possible strangulation and a suspected robbery attempt.
The four bodies were recovered at around 11:30 pm on Saturday from the Daspara, also known as Machhuapara, area of Rangpur city, according to local media reports. Police said the family’s belongings were scattered around the house, while the main gate was found locked.
The deceased were identified as 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their 23-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi and their 12-year-old son.
Ganapati had retired from Rangpur Zilla School and was reportedly working as a homoeopathic practitioner after retirement. His body was found on the roof. Pritilata and Agami were discovered on the staircase, while the 12-year-old boy was found dead underneath a bed.
Police investigate suspected strangulation
Subir Chowdhury, in charge of the Rangpur Metropolitan CID, said the scattered belongings suggested that the incident could have involved a robbery attempt. He cautioned, however, that investigators would be able to establish the exact sequence of events only after completing their probe.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Sanatan Chakrabarty said the bodies had been sent for post-mortem examinations. Ropes were reportedly found around the victims’ necks, prompting police to suspect that strangulation may have caused the deaths.
Family members report unusual circumstances
Pritilata’s younger sister, Puja, told local media that the family’s mobile phones had reportedly remained switched off since Thursday night. She said she visited the house on Saturday night and found the main gate locked, with the lights also switched off.
Ganapati’s niece, Soma Chakraborty, said she had spoken with him on Thursday afternoon. She claimed he had no known enemies and described him as a person who continued working as a homoeopathic practitioner following his retirement from teaching.
The locked house, the condition in which the bodies were discovered and the scattered belongings have left several questions unanswered. Police are awaiting post-mortem findings and other evidence to determine what happened to the family.
