India’s Hockey World Cup Campaign Ends in Agonising Draw Against Australia

India’s women’s hockey team bowed out of the World Cup after a tense 0-0 draw against Australia in Amstelveen on Sunday. The result was enough for Australia to reach the semi-finals on goals scored, ending India’s hopes by the narrowest possible margin.

The encounter brought back memories of Tokyo 2020, when India stunned Australia 1-0 in the Olympic quarter-final to reach their maiden Olympic semi-final. Five years later, the Hockeyroos again stood in India’s path, but history did not repeat itself.

India needed a victory to progress, whereas Australia only had to avoid defeat. The Netherlands’ 4-1 win over China earlier had kept India’s qualification hopes alive, but neither side could find the breakthrough.

Both teams finished with two points and a -2 goal difference. Australia, however, had scored three goals during the tournament compared with India’s two, giving them the advantage in the qualification tiebreaker.

Australia Put India Under Pressure

Australia started strongly and enjoyed greater possession during the opening quarter. They appeared to take an early lead when a close-range effort went into the net after deflecting off Jyoti, but India’s referral resulted in the goal being overturned for dangerous play.

India briefly played with 10 players after Baljeet received a green card, but Australia could not exploit the numerical advantage. Savita Punia made a key save to keep out Abigail Wilson as Australia continued to push forward.

Bichu Devi took over in goal during the second quarter and immediately had an important role, making a fine save from a reverse-hit. Australia earned a penalty corner but failed to make it count.

India also suffered injury concerns, with Ishika Chaudhary forced off after being struck by the ball and Lalremsiami later taking a blow to her knee. India won a penalty corner before half-time but could not convert it.

Chances Come, But Goals Do Not

India improved considerably after the interval, moving the ball with greater confidence and creating more attacking opportunities.

Australia again thought they had taken the lead when Stephanie Kershaw scored from a penalty corner. However, India successfully challenged the decision and the goal was overturned for dangerous play.

India had opportunities of their own, but Deepika could not finish a promising move involving Navneet and Baljeet. With the score still goalless after three quarters, India faced a decisive final 15 minutes.

India Take a Desperate Gamble

India committed players forward in search of the goal that would keep their campaign alive. Navneet and Lalremsiami had a major chance inside the circle but hesitation allowed Australia’s defence to recover.

With five minutes remaining, India removed Bichu Devi and added an outfield player, leaving the goal empty in their desperate search for a winner.

Australia responded with late pressure and penalty corners, but India defended bravely. Salima Tete produced a superb first-rush to deny Australia, while the Indian defence also survived a penalty corner without a goalkeeper.

The breakthrough never came.

The final whistle confirmed a heartbreaking 0-0 draw and India’s elimination. Australia moved into the semi-finals on goals scored, while India’s long wait for another World Cup semi-final appearance continues.

Despite the disappointment, India showed they could match one of the world’s top sides under immense pressure. The next step will be turning that resilience and belief into the goals needed to deliver results on the biggest stage.
