California Tragedy: Indian-Origin Student Dies After Car Plunges Into Ocean

A 19-year-old Indian-origin student at the University of California, Santa Cruz, died after the car she was travelling in plunged off a cliff and landed in the ocean near Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, California.

The student was identified as Alli Renee Singh, a psychology major and member of UCSC’s John R Lewis College community. She joined the university in June 2024 and was preparing to enter her third year, according to NRI Pulse.

TRAGIC CRASH NEAR STEAMER LANE

The incident occurred on April 13 near the well-known Steamer Lane surf break. When emergency teams arrived, they found the vehicle submerged along the rocky shoreline. A male occupant managed to escape from the vehicle and reach safety. He sustained minor injuries.

Singh remained trapped inside the submerged car. Four professional divers participated in the rescue effort and eventually brought her out of the vehicle. She was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance but later succumbed to her injuries, according to the Fire Department.

FAMILY MOURNS STUDENT

Singh’s aunt, Monica Singh-Strohmeier, confirmed the death in a social media post and appealed for privacy as the family dealt with the tragedy. She described Singh as a smart, loving and beautiful young woman who would be missed by everyone who knew her.

Singh was from Selma in Fresno County, California, and was preparing to begin her third year at UCSC. Her aunt also requested privacy for Singh’s mother and said further details about the family’s arrangements would be shared later.

COASTAL EROSION SPARKS SAFETY CONCERNS

The accident has also brought renewed attention to safety concerns along the coastline. According to a Los Angeles Times report, ongoing coastal erosion has severely affected portions of West Cliff Drive near the crash site. The erosion has reduced the buffer between the roadway and the cliff edge, increasing concerns for motorists using the route.

The crash follows another fatal incident in the Santa Cruz Mountains in June, when three people died after a vehicle reportedly went out of control and fell around 400 feet down an embankment.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to Singh’s vehicle leaving the roadway.
