Iran’s UNGA Delegation Under Tight Restrictions: No Shopping, Limited Movement in New York

A scaled-down Iranian delegation has arrived in New York for the 81st United Nations General Assembly.

With the United States imposing strict limits on the officials’ movement and purchases amid the continuing conflict between Washington and Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York on Tuesday, September 22. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also due to attend the UN General Assembly. The US had approved visas for the Iranian delegation on September 17.

According to a US State Department spokesperson cited by CNN, this year’s Iranian delegation is smaller than the one that attended the UN gathering in 2025.

Iranian Delegation Faces Movement Restrictions

The Iranian officials are subject to several restrictions during their stay in New York. The State Department said the delegation is prohibited from purchasing luxury and other goods covered by US sanctions policy.

Their movement in the city is also tightly controlled. According to the restrictions, the delegation can travel between the airport and its designated hotel, the Millennium Hilton, and between the hotel and United Nations headquarters.

The Millennium Hilton has hosted Iranian officials during previous UN General Assembly visits as well.

Araghchi’s First US Visit Since War Began

Araghchi’s arrival marks his first visit to the United States since the conflict between the US-Israel alliance and Iran began on February 28.

The conflict has significantly strained relations between Washington and Tehran. The United States has continued to signal the possibility of further action against Iran, while Tehran has warned of retaliation in the event of any fresh US strike.

The fighting has also affected regional energy supplies, with Iran’s actions around the Strait of Hormuz creating concerns for global oil markets.

Iran’s UNGA Participation

Despite years of tensions with Washington, Iranian leaders and officials have regularly attended the UN General Assembly.

Former Iranian President Hassan Rouhani addressed the assembly in 2015 and spoke in support of the nuclear agreement reached that year with the administration of US President Barack Obama.

Iranian leaders have continued to use the UN platform to present Tehran’s position on international issues, including its relations with the United States and its nuclear programme.

This year’s General Assembly will provide another major diplomatic platform for Pezeshkian and Araghchi, even as strict US restrictions govern the Iranian delegation’s movements and activities in New York.
