More than 50 students of Delhi University’s Lady Shri Ram College for Women took part in a solidarity march after the alleged gangrape of a minor girl at Aastha Kunj Park near Kalkaji Mandir, highlighting concerns over women’s safety in the area.
Carrying placards and raising slogans, the students demanded justice for the girl and called for stronger security arrangements around the college and nearby areas. The demonstration also focused on concerns over surveillance, police patrolling and the safety of students travelling to and from the campus.
Students Flag CCTV, Patrolling Gaps
The students began their march from inside the park near the college’s rear gate. The demonstration took place even as discussions were underway over their demands and permission for the march had not been granted.
Protesters alleged that CCTV coverage and police patrolling in the vicinity were inadequate. They said concerns about security around the college had existed even before the latest incident.
Students also claimed that incidents of stalking and harassment had been reported near the back gate and that such complaints had previously been brought to the attention of the college administration.
A poster circulated ahead of the protest carried the message: “It’s not my fault I crave the night air, it’s your fault you crave taking it away from me,” PTI reported.
The protesters said the incident had intensified existing fears among students and renewed calls for concrete safety measures around the campus.
Offline Classes To Resume On Thursday
LSR had suspended regular classes on Tuesday and Wednesday following the alleged gangrape and the subsequent police encounter involving one of the accused. The college has now announced that offline classes will resume from Thursday, September 24.
“Classes shall continue in regular offline mode from tomorrow in the College premises, i.e., Thursday, 24 September 2026,” the administration said in a notification. The police encounter took place around 50 metres from the college gate, triggering concern among students and staff.
Principal Kanika Ahuja said faculty mentors and the college counsellor would remain available to support students. “After we got to know about the unfortunate incident, we cancelled classes. The safety, security and well-being of our students is of paramount importance to us,” she told PTI.
Three Accused Arrested
Police have arrested three men in connection with the alleged gangrape, officials said. One of the accused, identified as Asif, sustained injuries in an exchange of fire with police while officers were trying to apprehend him.
The investigation remains underway as students continue to press for improved security, better surveillance and increased patrolling in and around the college.
