Stree 3 to arrive in 2028; Dinesh Vijan reveals Mahavatar shooting timeline
The wait for Stree 3 is set to continue a little longer, with producer Dinesh Vijan confirming that the third film in the hit horror-comedy franchise will release in 2028. The film will bring back Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, with Amar Kaushik returning to direct. Stree 3 was previously scheduled to release on August 13, 2027.
Dinesh Vijan confirms Stree 3 plans
Vijan made the announcement while appearing with Rajkummar Rao at FICCI FRAMES 2026, where the duo discussed Maddock Films’ horror-comedy universe and their upcoming projects.
Although the makers have yet to announce a specific release date, Vijan suggested that Stree 3 could arrive around Independence Day or Christmas in 2028. He also revealed that Kaushik has completed the script.
“Stree 3 arrives in 2028. If I say anything more, he’ll (Amar Kaushik) get upset with me because he just finished writing it. He thinks that I give out too many spoilers,” Vijan said.
He added that while the film will retain the elements audiences have enjoyed in the earlier instalments, its story will take viewers somewhere unexpected.
“Everything that you have loved about it, you’ll get it, but where it starts and where it ends will be a complete revelation,” he said, adding that the film could be an “Independence Day or a Christmas Day present” in 2028.
Mahavatar to begin shooting in January
Vijan also provided an update on Mahavatar, Amar Kaushik’s upcoming film starring Vicky Kaushal as Lord Parashuram.
Calling it one of Kaushik’s most ambitious projects, Vijan said the director is expected to begin shooting the film towards the end of January and complete it by June.
“Amar Kaushik is the most integral part of Stree and the entire horror comedy franchise. He directs our most ambitious film in January end, which is Bhagwan Parshuram’s story, called Mahavatar. He finishes that in June and at the end of next year, we go on floor,” Vijan said.
Rajkummar Rao on Stree’s journey
Rao also looked back at the making of the first Stree, recalling that the project started as a relatively small-budget film but had a team that strongly believed in its story and Kaushik’s direction.
He said the cast and crew shared a relaxed, playful atmosphere on set, which he believes was reflected in the final film.
The success of Stree and its 2024 sequel, Stree 2, turned the franchise into one of Maddock Films’ key horror-comedy properties, raising anticipation for its third chapter.
