Delhi Police has intensified security arrangements across the New Delhi district ahead of proposed Opposition protests at Jantar Mantar, with more than 3,000 personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
The protesters are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
As part of the security deployment, 27 companies of male personnel and four companies of female personnel have been stationed across the district. A police company generally comprises around 100 to 115 personnel.
Security has been reinforced at sensitive locations, including the Parliament complex, Parliament Street roundabout and the gates of the Election Commission. Additional police personnel have also been deployed at Metro station entrances in the area to prevent any disruption.
The stepped-up security comes amid a series of demonstrations in the national capital involving political parties, student organisations and civil society groups.
FIRs REGISTERED OVER RECENT PROTESTS
Delhi Police registered three FIRs on Monday following protests in which student groups, political leaders and civil society activists attempted to march towards Jantar Mantar.
Two FIRs were registered at Parliament Street police station and another at Connaught Place police station. Police invoked Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relates to disobedience of an order issued by a public servant.
Authorities have also imposed prohibitory orders across the New Delhi district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The restrictions prohibit gatherings, processions and demonstrations without prior permission.
The latest protests come days after a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on October 3. Three women journalists had alleged that they were physically mistreated and sexually harassed by police personnel during the protest.
Student groups, political leaders and civil society activists have since continued to mobilise around the demand for Kumar’s resignation, citing allegations linked to the SIR exercise.
With the latest demonstrations planned at Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police has increased its deployment at key government and public locations across the New Delhi district to prevent any breach of law and order.
