Elon Musk Channels $276 Million to US Midterm Election Groups After Restoring Ties With Trump
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has poured $276 million into political organisations backing right-wing candidates ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections, becoming the largest individual donor of the election cycle, according to The New York Times.
The donations, made since July, have pushed Musk’s total political contributions during the current election cycle to $366 million, the report said. A significant portion of the funds has gone to groups supporting Republican candidates as the party works to retain control of Congress.
Senate Republicans Receive $158 Million
The Senate Leadership Fund, a political action committee supporting Republican candidates, received the largest share of Musk’s latest donations, amounting to $158 million. The funding is intended to help Republicans defend their Senate majority.
Musk’s America PAC, his own political action committee, received another $76 million.
Other beneficiaries included the Congressional Leadership Fund, which received $20 million, and the Republican Governors Association and Lone Star Liberty PAC, which were each given $10 million. The Republican Attorneys General Association received $2 million.
Although US law places limits on how much an individual can donate directly to a candidate, political action committees can receive much larger contributions to finance broader political activities and support election campaigns.
Musk’s Financial Role in US Politics
Musk has emerged as one of the most prominent financial backers in American politics. During the 2024 presidential election, he contributed approximately $290 million to efforts supporting Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
His latest donations follow a period of public friction with Trump in 2025. The dispute erupted after Musk left the White House, where he had led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and subsequently criticised the president’s major tax and spending legislation.
The disagreement escalated into an exchange of sharp remarks, with Musk also threatening to establish a third political party.
Trump-Musk Relationship Shows Signs of Improvement
The two have since moved towards reconciliation, with Musk reappearing at White House events and renewing his association with Trump’s political circle.
Last week, Trump presented Musk with the National Medal of Science at a Washington event, offering another public indication of improving relations between the president and the billionaire entrepreneur.
Trump has also spoken favourably of Musk, referring to him as a “modern-day Thomas Edison” and a “national treasure”.
Midterm Campaigns Set to Benefit From Musk’s Spending
Musk’s latest contributions underline his continued influence in US election financing. The Republican Party is seeking to preserve its congressional strength in the November midterms, making financial support from major donors an important part of its campaign efforts.
The scale of Musk’s spending places him at the centre of the election fundraising landscape, with much of his money directed towards organisations aligned with Republican candidates. His renewed ties with Trump have also brought fresh attention to the billionaire’s political role as the midterm campaign season advances.
