Rohit Sharma to represent Mumbai in Vijay Hazare Trophy, domestic return lined up after Sri Lanka series
Rohit Sharma is set to return to domestic cricket once again, with the former India skipper confirming his availability for Mumbai in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. As reported by The Indian Express, the 38-year-old has informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will be available for the tournament following India’s three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in December.
The decision comes as Indian cricket looks to strengthen its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup by encouraging senior players to gain more match practice in domestic competitions.
India’s ODI series against Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place from December 13 to 19. The Vijay Hazare Trophy, meanwhile, begins on December 14, with the league stage continuing until December 29. Rohit is therefore expected to join Mumbai’s campaign after completing his international commitments.
The knockout stage of the tournament will be held from January 2 to 8. While Rohit’s participation has been confirmed, the number of matches he will play is yet to be decided.
An MCA source told The Indian Express that Rohit had conveyed his willingness to represent Mumbai after the Sri Lanka series. The source added that the batter would provide further details about his match availability at a later stage.
Rohit set for second straight Vijay Hazare appearance
Rohit’s participation will mark his second consecutive Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign after making his domestic comeback last season. Before that, he had last featured in the competition in 2018.
The veteran opener played two matches for Mumbai in Jaipur during the previous edition. His first appearance against Sikkim turned into a memorable outing as he smashed 155 runs off only 94 balls, showcasing his aggressive batting and ability to dominate bowling attacks.
However, his next match against Uttarakhand proved disappointing, with Rohit departing for a golden duck. Despite the contrasting results, his participation provided valuable game time in the 50-over format.
New Zealand series comes before domestic assignment
Before joining Mumbai, Rohit’s attention will be on India’s five-match ODI series against New Zealand, beginning November 4 in Auckland.
The experienced opener has already started his preparations for the series, returning to the practice nets alongside Virat Kohli. Both senior batters will be central to India’s plans as the team continues its preparations for the 2027 World Cup.
Rohit’s expected appearance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy will offer him additional opportunities to remain match-ready in the ODI format. His presence will also strengthen Mumbai’s batting line-up as they aim for a successful campaign in the domestic tournament.
