INDIA Bloc Rally Today: Opposition Gears Up for Massive ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ Protest in Delhi
The INDIA bloc is set to hold a major demonstration at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Congress-led opposition alliance has organised the rally following allegations highlighted in a report by The Indian Express. The event is scheduled to run from 10 am to 5 pm, with around 50,000 people expected to attend.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has called on students, civil society organisations and citizens to join the protest. He has described the gathering as an effort to safeguard the Constitution and democratic values. Gandhi has also appealed to participants to purchase festive items from local vendors and small shopkeepers, saying their business should benefit from the crowds arriving in the capital.
Several opposition parties have backed the rally, and a number of Chief Ministers and senior political leaders are expected to take part.
The Indian Youth Congress has planned a distinctive form of protest, with participants wearing white clothes to look like “ghosts”. The symbolism is aimed at highlighting the cases of voters who, according to the opposition, have been wrongly declared dead or deleted from electoral lists.
13,000 security personnel expected to be deployed
Delhi is witnessing extensive security preparations ahead of the opposition gathering. More than 3,000 police personnel and approximately 10,000 paramilitary personnel are expected to be deployed at and around Ramlila Maidan.
Police officials are preparing for a turnout of nearly 50,000 people. Security arrangements will also focus on preventing protesters from moving towards Jantar Mantar. Barricades, surveillance systems and designated security zones have been put in place to regulate the crowd.
The demonstration comes a day after opposition leaders staged a symbolic public impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Rahul Gandhi claimed that the Opposition had enough evidence to ensure Kumar could not continue as CEC. He also warned that the BJP would have to explain its position if it continued backing the election chief after the alleged evidence was made public.
The BJP responded by taking a dig at the opposition, suggesting that Rahul Gandhi could be declared its “mock Prime Minister”. Following large-scale protests earlier in October, Jantar Mantar was denotified as a protest venue. Ramlila Maidan is among three locations identified by Delhi Police for holding demonstrations.
BJP accuses opposition of making a mockery of democracy
The BJP launched a counterattack against the INDIA bloc over its symbolic public impeachment of Gyanesh Kumar, accusing opposition parties of turning democratic institutions into a political spectacle.
BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra rejected the allegations of electoral-roll manipulation during the SIR exercise. He also accused the Congress of having a history of political manoeuvring, claiming that Jawaharlal Nehru became Prime Minister through “vote theft” by replacing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
Patra also mocked Rahul Gandhi, calling him a “satellite that will never launch”. He suggested that opposition parties should retain Gandhi as their “mock Prime Minister for life”.
CJP supports opposition’s cause but stays away from rally
Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke met Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee in Delhi on Saturday. During the meeting, Dipke thanked her for extending support to the organisation’s youth-led demonstrations and standing by its leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka during their recent arrests.
Dipke expressed support for the INDIA bloc’s protest against alleged electoral-roll irregularities. However, he made it clear that the CJP would not participate in the November 1 rally.
Left party workers arrive in Delhi
Supporters of different Left parties started reaching New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday morning to participate in the INDIA bloc’s ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ rally.
Party workers carrying flags and banners gathered outside the station before moving towards Ramlila Maidan. The opposition alliance has brought together its supporters to protest against alleged discrepancies in the SIR process and raise concerns over electoral transparency.
Hardeep Singh Puri calls rally timing a political mistake
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri criticised the INDIA bloc for choosing November 1 for its Delhi rally, describing the decision as a serious political mistake.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Puri noted that the date marks the anniversary of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which erupted after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. More than 3,000 people were killed in Delhi during the violence.
Puri called the timing insensitive and said the opposition should have considered holding the demonstration after November 4. He also urged Rahul Gandhi to reflect on the decision.
Rahul Gandhi appeals to protesters to support local traders
Rahul Gandhi has urged people attending the rally to visit Delhi’s local markets and purchase festive goods from small traders.
His appeal followed concerns raised by business organisations that the large gathering could affect commercial activity during the festive season. Gandhi accused the BJP of creating unnecessary apprehension among traders and said the rally would not hurt their businesses.
In a post on X, accompanied by greetings for Diwali, Chhath and Bhai Dooj, he encouraged participants coming to Delhi to support small shopkeepers and traditional markets through their purchases.
Ramlila Maidan prepared for large-scale protest
Preparations for the rally began early Sunday morning at Ramlila Maidan. PTI visuals recorded around 5 am showed workers putting up posters, banners and cutouts across the venue.
A large stage, canopy tents, seating arrangements and public-address systems have been installed. Security barricades and separate enclosures have also been arranged to manage the expected gathering.
Authorities have put extensive crowd-control and surveillance measures in place, with thousands of security personnel expected to monitor the venue and surrounding areas throughout the day.
