Sanjay Gupta Dies at 57: ‘Shootout at Wadala’ Filmmaker Reportedly Suffered Bathroom Fall
Veteran Bollywood filmmaker Sanjay Gupta has died at the age of 57. According to Film Information, Gupta passed away on October 30, 2026, after reportedly suffering a fall in his bathroom. The exact circumstances of the incident and further details about his death have not yet been disclosed.
Gupta was among the filmmakers who brought stylised action and crime-based storytelling to mainstream Hindi cinema. Over the course of his career, he became particularly known for his collaborations with actor Sanjay Dutt. The duo worked together on several films, including Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004), Zinda (2006) and Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007).
The 2007 film Shootout at Lokhandwala, which Gupta directed, produced and co-wrote, drew inspiration from the 1991 shootout at Mumbai’s Lokhandwala Complex. He followed it with Shootout at Wadala in 2013, another crime drama rooted in real-life incidents.
Films that defined Sanjay Gupta’s career
Although crime dramas remained a major part of his filmmaking identity, Gupta also experimented with different subjects and genres. His directorial projects included Jazbaa (2015), starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Kaabil (2017), featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam.
He also directed the anthology film Dus Kahaniyaan (2007), which brought together several independent stories, as well as Acid Factory (2009) and Mumbai Saga (2021). The latter featured John Abraham and Emraan Hashmi.
In addition to directing, Gupta established himself as a producer. He founded White Feather Films in 2001 and backed a number of projects under the production banner.
His more recent films included The Miranda Brothers (2024), starring Meezaan Jafri and Harshvardhan Rane, and Visfot (2024), which featured Riteish Deshmukh and Fardeen Khan.
Began his journey in post-production
Gupta’s entry into the film industry came through post-production and sound design. Before becoming a director, he worked as an assistant to filmmaker Pankaj Parashar on projects such as the television series Karamchand and the film Jalwa.
His experience behind the scenes helped shape a filmmaking approach recognised for its stylised action, fast-paced narratives and strong urban settings. Over the years, his crime films, particularly those depicting Mumbai’s underworld, became an important part of his identity in Bollywood.
With a career spanning decades, Sanjay Gupta leaves behind a body of work that includes action thrillers, crime dramas, anthology films and productions across different genres.
