Devon Conway Out of India ODI Series After Concussion, New Zealand’s Injury Woes Deepen

New Zealand have suffered another major setback in their ongoing ODI series against India, with opener Devon Conway ruled out of the remaining four matches after sustaining a concussion during a training session. His absence adds to the hosts’ growing injury concerns, as Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman are also unavailable for the series.

Conway suffered the injury on Tuesday at Eden Park when he collided with teammate Matt Henry while attempting to take a catch during fielding practice. As a result, he was ruled out of the opening ODI, with Tim Seifert stepping in as his replacement at the top of the batting order.

Seifert scored 38 runs, but New Zealand failed to put up a competitive total and were dismissed for 185 in 40.2 overs. Blair Tickner provided some resistance with a late contribution of 34 runs. For India, Arshdeep Singh led the bowling attack with four wickets, while Gurnoor Brar claimed three.

India’s chase was briefly disrupted by rain, prompting a revision of the target to 143 runs in 32 overs under the DLS method. Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck, but Virat Kohli’s 74 off 51 deliveries and Shubman Gill’s 37 ensured India remained firmly in control. The visitors completed the chase at 143 for five in 22.4 overs, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

New Zealand Cricket confirmed on Friday that Conway would miss the rest of the ODI series. Nick Kelly, who was initially selected for the fourth and fifth matches, has been brought into the squad as his replacement and is set to join the team in Wellington. Dale Phillips of Auckland Aces has also been added to the New Zealand A squad for its final four-day match against India A.

What Happened During Conway’s Training Session?

The incident took place during a fielding session at Eden Park on Tuesday, when Conway and Henry collided while attempting to catch the same ball. Both players were immediately attended to by medical staff and underwent assessments for possible head injuries.

Conway was taken to an Auckland medical facility for further evaluation, where doctors confirmed that he had suffered a concussion. Henry, on the other hand, has been cleared of concussion and is available for the second ODI.

Ravindra and Chapman Also Missing

Conway’s withdrawal further weakens New Zealand’s squad, which was already without two key players. Rachin Ravindra is recovering from a shoulder injury, while Mark Chapman has been ruled out because of a hamstring problem. Both players were unavailable before the series got underway.

Henry’s availability provides some relief for the home side, although the fast bowler has also faced fitness concerns. He missed the final three T20Is against India after suffering a low-grade tear in his right quadriceps.

New Zealand now face the challenge of reshaping their batting order and strengthening their combination with several regular players sidelined. After losing the series opener, the hosts will be eager to produce a stronger performance and level the contest.

The second ODI between India and New Zealand will be played at Hagley Oval in Wellington on Saturday, November 7.
