Taniya Scripts History With Silver, Becomes First Indian To Win Youth Olympics Beach Wrestling Medal

India’s Taniya etched her name in the record books at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, becoming the first Indian athlete to win a medal in beach wrestling at the global youth competition. She secured silver in the women’s 75kg category after suffering a narrow 1-2 defeat against China’s Min Zhao in the final on Saturday.

While the gold medal remained out of her reach, Taniya’s impressive performances throughout the competition made her historic podium finish a major achievement for Indian wrestling. The occasion was particularly special as beach wrestling featured at the Summer Youth Olympic Games for the first time.

China’s Zhao, who defeated Taniya in the final, further enhanced her credentials with the gold medal. She had earlier captured the women’s 69kg title at the 2025 U17 World Wrestling Championships in Athens, beating Germany’s Ayla Sahin 13-2.

FOUR WINS POWER TANIYA’S HISTORIC CAMPAIGN

Taniya displayed her strength and consistency from the opening round, registering a 3-1 victory over Germany’s Mia Bauer. She then defeated Greece’s Vasiliki Karavanou 3-0 before completing her group-stage campaign with a 4-1 win against Estonia’s Merily Vaester.

Her unbeaten run in the group stage ensured she finished at the top of her pool and advanced to the semi-finals.

The semi-final presented a tougher challenge against American wrestler Matilda Ann Hruby. The United States competitor was considered a strong gold-medal contender, having won the 75kg title at the U17 Beach Wrestling World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, in August. She had also won all five of her bouts at that tournament by fall.

Taniya, however, produced a determined display to overcome Hruby 3-1 and earn a place in the final. Although she eventually lost the title clash against Zhao, her four victories in five bouts ensured a memorable silver-medal finish.

The young Indian wrestler had previously showcased her talent at the 2026 U17 World Wrestling Championships in Baku, winning bronze in the women’s 69kg freestyle category. She secured the medal with a commanding 12-2 victory over Poland’s Maja Wejchan.

INDIA’S MEDAL TALLY CLIMBS TO SEVEN

With Taniya’s silver, India’s medal count at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games increased to seven, comprising three silver and four bronze medals.

Khushbu Darjada had earlier won silver in the women’s 63kg judo event, while Tanvi Patri secured a second-place finish in women’s singles badminton.

India’s swimming contingent contributed three bronze medals. Dhinidhi Desinghu finished third in the women’s 100m and 200m freestyle events, while Tirthank Pegu won bronze in the men’s 200m butterfly, becoming the first Indian male swimmer to claim a Youth Olympics medal.

Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu also earned a bronze medal in the women’s changquan combined event in wushu.

Taniya’s achievement has added another discipline to India’s medal-winning list at the Games. More importantly, her historic silver has given Indian beach wrestling a memorable beginning on the Youth Olympic stage.
