Ahead of ‘Ramayana’ Release, Delhi Ramlila Mahasangh Issues Caution to Filmmakers

Ahead of the release of Ramayana, the Shri Ramlila Mahasangh has sought a special preview screening of the film, saying it wants to ensure there are no depictions.

That could hurt religious sentiments or trigger a controversy similar to that surrounding Adipurush in 2023. In a press note, the organisation said its president, Arjun Kumar, has written to director Nitesh Tiwari and the film’s producers, requesting that a delegation from the Mahasangh be allowed to watch the film before its theatrical release during Diwali 2026 in India and overseas.

Referring to the backlash against Adipurush, Kumar said the earlier adaptation faced widespread criticism from members of the Sanatan community and traditional Ramlila organisations over its portrayal of key characters and locations from the Ramayana.

According to the Mahasangh, objections to Adipurush included the depiction of Lanka in black instead of gold and the portrayal of Ravana and his army in ways that many believed deviated from traditional beliefs.

“We have received information that Ramayana may also contain certain scenes that could hurt the sentiments of Hindus in India and abroad. We have therefore requested a preview screening so that any objectionable scenes or dialogues can be identified and removed before the film is released,” Kumar said in the press note.

He added that if the filmmakers do not agree to the request and objectionable content is found after the film’s release, the Shri Ramlila Mahasangh, along with other Hindu organisations, would organise protests outside cinema halls in Delhi and other parts of the country.

The trailer of Ramayana was unveiled during Brahma Muhurat and opens with Yash’s portrayal of Ravana, who emerges from the shadows before entering his grand palace and declaring his dominion over the three worlds.

The trailer then introduces Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, with Arun Govil appearing as King Dasharatha. It also features Sai Pallavi as Sita and Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana, showcasing key moments from the epic, including Rama and Sita’s wedding, Kaikeyi’s demand that sends Rama into exile, Sita’s abduction and the build-up to the battle between Rama and Ravana.

Rakul Preet Singh plays Shurpanakha, while Sunny Deol essays the role of Hanuman. The film’s music has been composed by Hans Zimmer and AR Rahman.

Ramayana: Part 1 is scheduled to release in theatres during Diwali 2026, with Part 2 slated for a Diwali 2027 release.
