England captain Ben Stokes and all-rounder Gus Atkinson have been left out of the squad for the second Test against New Zealand as an investigation continues into an alleged breach of team discipline following the series opener at Lord’s.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed on Wednesday that neither player would be available for selection for the match at The Oval, scheduled to begin on June 17. The decision comes amid an ongoing inquiry into reports that the pair violated the team’s curfew after England’s victory in the first Test.
“The England & Wales Cricket Board can confirm that, given the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the Rothesay 2nd Test against New Zealand,” the ECB said in a statement.
With Stokes unavailable, Joe Root will captain England for the first time since March 2022. It will also be the first occasion that England play a Test under a different captain since the beginning of the Bazball era.
The controversy stems from events that reportedly took place after England’s 115-run win at Lord’s. According to British media reports, Stokes and Atkinson attended a nightclub in Chelsea after the match and allegedly remained out beyond the squad’s midnight curfew. Reports further claimed that an altercation involving members of another sporting group occurred at the venue, prompting the ECB to launch an investigation.
The matter has reportedly been referred to the independent Cricket Regulator, although neither Stokes nor Atkinson has been formally charged with any offence.
The development has triggered fresh scrutiny of England’s team culture and discipline standards. It also comes against the backdrop of previous off-field incidents involving England players, which prompted the management to introduce stricter behavioural guidelines and curfews during tours and home assignments.
Meanwhile, fast bowler Jofra Archer has returned to the squad after missing the opening Test as part of workload management plans. Archer is among several changes made by England ahead of the second match of the three-Test series.
England Squad for 2nd Test: Joe Root (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, James Rew, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith and Josh Tongue.
The ECB has not indicated when the investigation is expected to conclude, leaving uncertainty over Stokes’s availability for the remainder of the series.
