For the first time in more than two decades, MS Dhoni spent an IPL season away from the spotlight.
The former Chennai Super Kings captain missed IPL 2026 due to injury, bringing an end to a remarkable streak of uninterrupted involvement in the tournament. While Dhoni was absent from the IPL stage, he returned to familiar surroundings on Tuesday, attending the opening ceremony of the inaugural Jharkhand T20 League at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi.
The former India captain watched the tournament opener from the stands, receiving a warm welcome from fans at his home venue. Dressed casually in a black polo shirt and sunglasses, Dhoni’s presence added star power to the launch of the state-based competition.
Organised by the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) in partnership with AV24 Sports Private Limited, the inaugural edition of the Jharkhand T20 League will feature 27 matches, including the semi-finals and final, over a two-week period at the JSCA complex.
Six teams — Ranchi Titans, Jamshedpur Steelers, Chota Nagpur Royals, Koylanchal Super Kings, Dhanbad Diamonds and Santhal Strikers — will compete in the tournament.
Speaking at the launch, JSCA president Ajay Nath Shah Deo described the league as a major step forward for cricket in the state, aimed at creating opportunities for young talent. Former India cricketer and JSCA honorary secretary Saurabh Tiwary said the competition would allow emerging players to showcase their skills alongside experienced campaigners, while honorary joint secretary Shahbaz Nadeem highlighted the tournament’s role in strengthening the state’s cricketing pathway.
Dhoni’s appearance at the venue underscored the significance of the league’s launch. As Jharkhand’s most celebrated cricketer, his presence provided a major boost to a tournament that hopes to become an important platform for nurturing the state’s next generation of talent.
