Audio Clip of Mamata Banerjee’s Alleged Call to Hospital CEO Triggers Political Storm
A purported audio clip of Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee allegedly berating the CEO of a leading Kolkata hospital has sparked a political controversy in West Bengal, days after her nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee was attacked during a public visit in South 24 Parganas.
The viral recording, which surfaced on social media, allegedly captures Mamata Banerjee confronting Belle Vue Hospital CEO Pradip Tandon over the treatment and discharge process involving Abhishek Banerjee following the attack.
In the clip, a voice purported to be Mamata’s is heard accusing the hospital administration of wrongdoing and expressing anger over its handling of the matter.
The authenticity of the audio recording has not been independently verified.
Attack on Abhishek Banerjee
The controversy stems from an incident in Sonarpur, where Abhishek Banerjee had gone to meet families allegedly affected by post-poll violence.
During the visit, a group of protesters surrounded the TMC leader, throwing stones and eggs while shouting slogans against him. Videos from the scene showed security personnel and party workers rushing to escort him away as tensions escalated.
Abhishek was seen wearing a protective helmet and being shielded by aides as he navigated through the crowd. Visuals also showed his shirt torn during the confrontation.
After the incident, the Diamond Harbour MP accused BJP workers of orchestrating the attack.
Calling it a “BJP-sponsored” assault, Abhishek alleged that the attackers intended to cause him serious harm and criticised the police for failing to prevent the incident.
Mamata’s Allegations Against BJP
Addressing reporters after the attack, Mamata Banerjee claimed that Abhishek’s injuries were more serious than initially believed and required extensive medical attention.
According to her, he underwent several diagnostic tests, including scans and examinations, after being admitted to hospital. She alleged that BJP leaders and a senior police officer attempted to pressure doctors and hospital authorities regarding his treatment and discharge.
The TMC chief questioned suggestions that Abhishek’s condition was not serious, arguing that his admission to intensive care reflected the nature of his injuries.
She also claimed that while doctors at one hospital had advised rest and observation, concerns over his health prompted his transfer to Belle Vue Hospital for further monitoring.
Audio Row Deepens Political Battle
The emergence of the audio clip has added a new dimension to the political fallout from the Sonarpur incident.
Opposition leaders have seized on the recording to target Mamata Banerjee, while the TMC has maintained that the focus should remain on the attack against Abhishek Banerjee and the circumstances surrounding it.
With questions being raised over both the assault and the subsequent medical treatment, the controversy has quickly evolved into another flashpoint in the increasingly bitter political rivalry between the ruling TMC and the BJP in West Bengal.
As the debate intensifies, attention is likely to remain fixed on the alleged phone call, the claims made by Mamata Banerjee regarding pressure on hospital authorities, and the ongoing political fallout from the attack on her nephew.
