Delhi-NCR Braces for More Rain as Waterlogging Triggers Traffic Chaos, Red Alert Active

Delhi-NCR was hit by another spell of rain on Saturday, a day after heavy showers caused widespread waterlogging and severe traffic congestion across the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed parts of Delhi under a red alert, while several areas in the wider NCR remain under an orange alert. The weather department has forecast thunderstorms and moderate rainfall at different times throughout September 5, with the possibility of heavier showers raising concerns about fresh waterlogging.

Heavy rain disrupts Delhi-NCR

Continuous rainfall on Friday led to waterlogging on several major roads in Delhi and Gurugram, severely affecting traffic movement. Long queues were reported at several key locations as commuters struggled to navigate flooded stretches.

Waterlogging around Indira Gandhi International Airport also caused disruption, with passengers facing difficulties while travelling to and from the terminals.

The latest rain spell has raised concerns that low-lying areas and already waterlogged roads could face further disruption if heavy showers continue.

Heavy showers likely in Noida, Ghaziabad

Independent forecaster Navdeep Dahiya has predicted a fresh spell of heavy rainfall across Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad from Saturday afternoon through the late evening.

Dahiya said Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad could receive 60-140 mm of rain, while Delhi and Gurugram may record 30-80 mm by midnight on September 5.

According to the forecast, intermittent showers could occur during the first half of the day before rainfall intensifies from the afternoon into the evening. The heavier spell could trigger additional waterlogging and slow traffic across the region.

Several parts of Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh are also likely to receive heavy rain.

Delhi weather forecast

The IMD has forecast generally cloudy skies with moderate rain in Delhi on September 5. Temperatures are expected to remain between 25°C and 30°C, with humidity levels potentially reaching 95%.

On September 6, Delhi is likely to remain cloudy with light rain or drizzle. The temperature could range between 23°C and 32°C.

From September 7 onwards, the weather is expected to become partly cloudy, with temperatures gradually rising. The maximum temperature could remain around 34°C through September 10.

While rainfall is expected to ease after September 6, partly cloudy conditions are likely to persist across the capital.

For now, the immediate concern remains Saturday’s forecast of heavy rain, particularly in areas already struggling with waterlogging and traffic disruption following Friday’s downpour.
