500-Metre Underpass Proposed In Mayur Vihar To Ease Chilla, Trilokpuri Traffic

Traffic movement around Mayur Vihar Phase 1 could get a major boost if a proposed 500-metre underpass near the Crown Plaza traffic signal becomes a reality. The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) is examining the proposal to create a dedicated passage for vehicles travelling from the DND side towards Chilla and Trilokpuri, allowing them to bypass the congested junction.

The project is aimed at easing one of east Delhi’s key traffic bottlenecks, particularly during peak commuting hours.

Through Traffic Could Bypass The Signal

The Crown Plaza junction currently handles through traffic along with local vehicles and turning movements. The convergence of these traffic streams frequently leads to queues and delays. Under the proposed design, vehicles travelling towards Chilla and Trilokpuri would use the underpass instead of passing through the signal.

Local and turning traffic would continue to operate at ground level. Officials are also studying the possibility of a rotary on the surface to improve movement for vehicles that do not use the underpass. If implemented, the project could effectively remove one major signal stop from the journey of thousands of commuters.

PWD Assessing Alignment And Entry Points

The underpass is expected to be around 500 metres long, but its exact alignment has not yet been finalised. PWD officials are examining how the proposed structure would connect with the existing road network and where suitable entry and exit points could be created.

Traffic management at the surface level is also being assessed as part of the feasibility exercise. The proposal has not yet reached the construction stage. Authorities will first have to determine whether the alignment is technically and operationally feasible.

Underground Utilities Could Affect The Plan

A detailed survey of underground infrastructure will be a key part of the assessment. Officials will map water pipelines, electricity cables, gas lines, telecom networks and other utilities along the proposed route.

Where necessary, conflicting infrastructure may have to be protected, relocated or modified before construction can begin. The findings could influence both the final alignment and the overall cost and complexity of the project.

• The PWD will also survey trees along the proposed route.

The exercise will record their species, size, condition and location, with officials looking to preserve as many trees as possible while planning the infrastructure. Any requirement for tree-related intervention will therefore be considered during the feasibility process.

Mayur Vihar-Noida Connectivity In Focus

The proposed Crown Plaza underpass is part of a wider effort to improve traffic movement around Mayur Vihar and the Delhi-Noida corridor. The ongoing Barapullah Phase III project is also aimed at strengthening connectivity between Mayur Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan.

For commuters travelling towards Chilla and Trilokpuri, the proposed underpass could eventually provide a faster alternative through the busy Crown Plaza junction.

However, the project remains at the feasibility stage, and its final alignment, design and construction timeline will depend on the outcome of the ongoing technical and traffic assessments.
