Double Spring Fire Erupts Near Gardnerville: Latest Updates, Evacuations And Map

A vegetation fire dubbed the Double Spring Fire broke out near Gardnerville in Douglas County, Nevada, on Saturday, August 8, prompting evacuation warnings and the closure of a section of US Highway 395.

The blaze was reported near Highway 395 and Spring Valley Drive in the Double Spring area. According to Watch Duty, which tracks wildfire activity, the fire had grown to approximately 50 acres.

The Nevada Department of Transportation also announced a closure on US 395.

“U.S. 395 CLOSED south of Gardnerville near Leviathan Mine Road due to wildfire. AVOID THE AREA,” the department said in a post on X.

Watch Duty reported evacuation warnings for the Double Spring and Leviathan Mine areas. Reverse 911 notifications were also sent to residents in Pinenut Estates, Double Springs and Leviathan Mine, according to the wildfire tracking service.

A map showing the affected area was also made available through Watch Duty as the fire continued to develop.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. The cause of the fire had also not been officially determined.

SMOKE AND FLAMES SEEN NEAR GARDNERVILLE

Videos and photographs shared online showed a large plume of smoke rising from the fire south of Gardnerville.

A local reporter posted footage from a distance showing thick smoke over the area and noted that US 395 had been closed because of the Double Springs fire.

Other images shared online appeared to show the blaze between Gardnerville and Holbrook Junction, while fixed-camera footage captured smoke spreading across the surrounding landscape.

A local resident also described receiving an emergency alert before seeing a large plume of smoke and flames in the Pinenut area.

Residents expressed concern online as the fire developed, particularly for communities near Leviathan Mine Road and the Double Springs area.

Some people reported seeing lightning in the area shortly before the fire was observed. Others claimed the blaze had been caused by a lightning strike.

However, there was no immediate official confirmation that lightning was responsible for starting the Double Spring Fire.

With evacuation warnings in place and US 395 closed south of Gardnerville, authorities urged people to avoid the affected area while firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
