Fresh Flood Threat in Nepal as Landslide Blocks Chaulani River in Darchula

A massive landslide has partially blocked Nepal’s Chaulani River in Darchula district, triggering concerns over a possible flash flood and prompting authorities to warn people living downstream.

The landslide occurred at Bhattar in Api Himal Rural Municipality, where huge amounts of debris fell into the river and disrupted its normal flow. Officials have cautioned that another landslide could completely block the river, creating the risk of a sudden breach and flooding in downstream settlements.

Authorities have urged residents along the riverbanks to remain alert and move to safer locations if conditions worsen. Security personnel have been deployed in vulnerable areas to monitor the situation, warn residents and respond to any emergency.

Sudurpaschim Chief Minister Khagraj Bhatta has directed local administrations and security agencies to remain on high alert and make necessary preparations. Emergency contact numbers have also been issued for people requiring assistance during flood or disaster situations.

The Armed Police Force said the Chaulani River was currently flowing normally. Personnel stationed at the Nepal Chameliya Hydropower Security Base in Balanch have nevertheless been mobilised to monitor the river and provide warnings if its water level or flow changes.

The Chaulani, also known as the Chamelia River, originates in the Api Himal region before joining the Mahakali River, which runs along part of the Nepal-India border.

The fresh alert comes as Nepal continues to recover from devastating floods and flash floods in several parts of the country. The recent disasters have claimed lives, displaced communities and caused extensive damage to infrastructure.

Authorities are particularly concerned about further rainfall in the area. Additional landslides combined with heavy rain could worsen the blockage and increase the risk of a sudden flash flood downstream.
