The Rise of Slow Luxury in India’s Domestic Travel

India’s domestic travel landscape is shifting. Travelers are moving away from crowded itineraries and hurried sightseeing, seeking experiences that offer depth, privacy, and meaningful connections. Today, luxury isn’t measured by speed or spectacle—it’s defined by the quality of moments, authenticity of surroundings, and emotional resonance of a stay.

Luxury Redefined
Nibhrant Shah, Managing Director & Co-CEO of Isprava Group, which manages Lohono Stays, explains the change:

“Luxury today is about depth, privacy, and emotional connection. Guests want personalized experiences and extended stays that allow them to truly immerse themselves in a destination. Luxury homestays are at the center of this movement—they offer comfort with character.”

Shah notes that true luxury is intimate, immersive, and quietly indulgent. Slow travel allows guests to appreciate local craftsmanship, traditions, and meaningful experiences that fast-paced tourism simply cannot provide.

Longer Stays, Richer Experiences
The trend is also visible in India’s premium villa and homestay market. Ritwik Khare, Founder and CEO of ELIVAAS, observes that modern travelers prioritize experiences that let them recharge and disconnect.

“Rather than hopping from one destination to another, travelers now prefer staying longer in one place that combines modern amenities with natural beauty. Villas and homestays give guests the chance to unwind, enjoy nature, and still have everything they need at their fingertips,” Khare says.

Recent data supports this shift: over 50% of Indian travelers now opt for longer holidays, and nearly 84% are willing to spend more for comfort and immersive experiences. Guests are increasingly seeking privacy while engaging with local culture, cuisine, and meaningful activities with family and friends.

Quality Over Quantity

“The focus is no longer on doing more but on living better: enrichment over exhaustion, quality over quantity,” says Khare. This approach not only elevates the traveler’s experience but also creates sustainable value for villa owners and homestay operators, positioning their properties as central to India’s evolving domestic tourism market.

A Fundamental Shift
Both Shah and Khare agree that slow luxury is more than a trend—it’s a redefinition of what premium travel means in India. Guests now seek authentic connections, memorable moments, and spaces that allow them to recharge fully.

As Shah puts it, “Luxury is inherently slow,” while Khare adds that meaningful, immersive experiences are what today’s travelers truly seek. Together, their insights underscore a clear trajectory for India’s premium hospitality sector—one where authenticity, connection, and quality define true luxury.
