Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has cast doubt on Rajasthan Royals’ decision to elevate Riyan Parag as captain for IPL 2026, saying the move doesn’t align with his overall track record.
While Rajasthan have delivered a respectable campaign this season, Manjrekar questioned the franchise’s continued faith in Parag, pointing to his inconsistency with the bat since his debut in 2019.
Parag also drew attention off the field after being caught vaping in the dressing room during a game against Punjab Kings, an incident that resulted in a 25 per cent fine on his match fees.
Speaking on Sportstar’s Insight Edge podcast, Manjrekar said Parag’s confidence and body language stand out, but added that his performances haven’t consistently justified the opportunities he has received.
He further questioned the transition in leadership from Sanju Samson to Parag, noting that the change is hard to explain purely on cricketing merit.
Manjrekar also pointed out that Parag’s aggressive approach—often marked by eye-catching strokes followed by dismissals—reflects a pattern of overconfidence that has limited his impact.
In his view, while Parag remains a player with evident belief and flair, his elevation to captaincy remains a puzzling call by the franchise.
