‘It Frustrates Michelle’: Barack Obama Says Donald Trump Presidency Created ‘Genuine Tension’ in Marriage

Barack Obama says his more vocal opposition during Donald Trump’s presidency created “genuine tension” at home, as it pulled him back into political life more than he had expected after leaving office.

In an interview with The New Yorker, Obama said he initially believed democratic institutions and presidential norms would constrain Trump’s actions, but later felt compelled to speak out more publicly as controversial policies emerged, particularly on immigration and travel restrictions.

He said that increased political engagement came with personal consequences, noting that it affected his family life and created strain in his relationship with former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Obama added that Michelle Obama would have preferred a quieter post-presidency, with more focus on family time and stepping back from political debates.

He acknowledged that the expectation for former presidents to remain active in public discourse also contributed to the pressure, even though it came at a personal cost.

While he has largely avoided direct political confrontation since leaving office, Obama said he has occasionally felt the need to respond to misinformation or public attacks during Trump’s presidency.
