Imran Khan Returns Home After Mumbai Police Detention; Lekha Washington Confirms ‘We Are Fine’
Actor Imran Khan has returned home after being detained by Mumbai Police during a protest at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday. His girlfriend, Lekha Washington, shared updates on social media, confirming that the group was safe while alleging that police prevented them from using a vehicle to return home.
Lekha Washington Shares Details of the Incident
Following the detention, Lekha posted videos describing the group’s situation. In one video, she claimed that the police were not allowing them to leave in a car or any other vehicle, forcing them to walk along the road.
She later shared another update to reassure people about their safety, saying that everyone was fine and on their way home.
Her posts offered a glimpse into the group’s experience after the police action and addressed concerns from people following the incident.
Zayn Marie Khan Posts Photo From Police Van
Imran attended the demonstration with Lekha and his cousin, Zayn Marie Khan. Zayn shared a photograph taken inside a police van, showing herself sitting alongside the couple.
She captioned the picture, “INQUILAAB ZINDABAAD.”
Imran was seen smiling and making a peace sign in the photograph. Zayn also shared a video in which she asked him whether he had ever been to jail. The actor responded with a smile, suggesting that the situation might lead to that possibility.
Why Imran Khan Joined the Protest
Speaking to reporters before his detention, Imran said he had participated in the protest in his personal capacity as a Mumbai resident, rather than as a representative of any organisation.
The actor said he wanted to understand why people’s freedom of movement was being restricted and why their voices were allegedly being suppressed.
He clarified that he had not come to make demands but to stand as an individual concerned about the restrictions imposed on the demonstration.
Over 400 People Detained at August Kranti Maidan
The protest was held in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) call for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Mumbai Police said more than 400 people were detained during the demonstration. Police officials maintained that permission had not been obtained for the gathering and cited Bombay High Court directions restricting protests to Azad Maidan.
CJP workers presented a different account, claiming they had contacted Mumbai Police by email to seek permission but had received no response.
The incident has brought renewed attention to the dispute over protest permissions in Mumbai. Meanwhile, Imran’s return home and Lekha’s social media updates have reassured followers about the group’s safety following the detention.
