Portugal Eager for Cristiano Ronaldo’s Return Despite Disciplinary Probe
Portugal have expressed their desire to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back into the national team despite launching disciplinary proceedings against the veteran striker over his reported departure from the squad’s camp ahead of a Nations League fixture against Denmark.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) confirmed that action had been initiated against the 41-year-old captain, who reportedly left the team’s base in Copenhagen following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over his role in the side.
Despite the incident, FPF president Pedro Proenca has indicated that the federation, coaching staff and players want Ronaldo to return once the issue has been resolved. The decision on any potential punishment will be taken by the federation’s independent Disciplinary Committee.
FPF Confirms Disciplinary Proceedings
Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported that the FPF had formally initiated proceedings against Ronaldo and classified the case as urgent.
The federation reportedly confirmed that a non-automatic preventive suspension had been imposed on the player, following an earlier period of automatic preventive suspension before the formal proceedings began.
However, the development has not changed Portugal’s stated position on their captain’s future. Proenca said there was a shared desire among the federation, the coaching staff and the players to welcome Ronaldo back into the squad.
He emphasised that the final decision on disciplinary measures would rest exclusively with the independent Disciplinary Committee, rather than the federation’s leadership.
The committee will assess the matter and determine the appropriate outcome under the applicable disciplinary process.
Reported Dispute With Head Coach
Ronaldo’s departure reportedly came after he was left on the bench during Portugal’s match against Norway. Reports suggested that the forward was unhappy with Jesus over what he believed were two broken assurances regarding his role in the team.
The disagreement reportedly strained relations between the player and the coach. Jesus, however, denied making any agreement with Ronaldo while leaving open the possibility of the striker returning to the national side.
Portugal went on to register a 2-1 victory, but the episode raised questions about Ronaldo’s immediate future with the national team.
The federation’s latest comments suggest that, despite the ongoing disciplinary case, the wider team setup remains interested in retaining the experienced forward.
Ronaldo Apologises and Reaffirms Commitment
Ronaldo addressed the controversy on Tuesday, apologising for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his teammates.
The Portugal captain also reiterated his readiness to represent the country again, indicating that he would remain available for selection after serving any punishment arising from the incident.
The disciplinary proceedings are still ongoing, and no final decision has been announced. Ronaldo’s return will therefore depend on the committee’s ruling.
For now, Portugal’s message is that the door remains open for their captain, even as the federation allows the independent disciplinary process to take its course.
