Veteran batter Ajinkya Rahane has urged Sanju Samson to stop trying to replicate Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting and instead trust his own natural style, as the wicketkeeper-batter continues to endure a lean patch ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Samson’s struggles continued after he was dismissed for a golden duck in the latest match, taking his tally to just 16 runs from three outings in 2026. His form has drawn attention, especially with Abhishek Sharma delivering yet another standout performance at the top of the order.
Abhishek smashed a rapid half-century off just 14 balls as India cruised to an eight-wicket win, further underlining the contrast between the two openers. Meanwhile, Samson’s numbers as an opener remain worrying. In his last nine innings in the role, he has managed only 104 runs at an average of 11.55 and a strike rate of 133.33.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Rahane said that backing Samson and communicating clearly would be key for the team management and captain Suryakumar Yadav. He noted that batting alongside a player in exceptional form can often create pressure to match the scoring rate.
“When someone like Abhishek Sharma is going strong at the other end, a batter can feel the need to do the same. That’s where Sanju needs reassurance. He should stick to his own game plan and not compare himself,” Rahane said.
Rahane also highlighted Samson’s recent performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 233 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 137.86, stressing that the wicketkeeper-batter thrives when allowed to play with freedom.
“He’s a quality player and a match-winner. The management just needs to give him clarity and freedom. Once that belief comes in, the runs will follow,” Rahane added.
Offering advice on getting back into form, Rahane suggested that Samson focus on spending more time at the crease rather than going hard from the outset.
“A 15-ball 25 or a 20-ball 30 can help him regain rhythm. Take the first couple of overs out and then build from there,” he said.
With the series already wrapped up and the fourth T20I set to be played in Visakhapatnam, it remains to be seen whether India persists with Samson at the top or opts for the returning Tilak Varma.
