Shreyas Iyer to Lead India in T20Is, Teen Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Earns Maiden Call-Up
India have handed the reins of their T20I side to Shreyas Iyer, naming him captain for the upcoming white-ball tour of Ireland and England. The selectors also rewarded teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with his first senior India call-up after a record-breaking IPL campaign.
The squad marks the beginning of a new T20 cycle for India, with Iyer returning to the format for the first time since December 2023. He will lead a 16-member squad that includes vice-captain Tilak Varma and returning fast bowler Harshit Rana.
Iyer Gets the Nod
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said Iyer’s leadership experience and recent performances made him the obvious choice to take charge of the T20 side.
The Mumbai batter has significantly enhanced his captaincy credentials over the past two IPL seasons. After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, he followed it up by leading Punjab Kings to the final the following year.
His batting form has been equally impressive. Iyer amassed 498 runs during IPL 2026 at an average of 55.23 and a strike rate touching 169, underlining his value as both a batter and leader.
The appointment also signals the end of Suryakumar Yadav’s stint as India’s T20I captain. While Suryakumar played a key role during the previous cycle, the selectors have opted to move forward with a new leadership group as they build towards future ICC events and the Asian Games.
Sooryavanshi’s Meteoric Rise
The biggest talking point from the squad announcement is the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
The 15-year-old opener enjoyed a dream IPL season, finishing as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 776 runs at a breathtaking strike rate of 237.31. He also smashed a record 72 sixes and swept the major individual awards, including the Orange Cap, Emerging Player of the Tournament and MVP honours.
His exploits have now earned him a place in the senior national team, completing a remarkable rise in less than a year.
Harshit Returns, Prince Gets Rewarded
India have also welcomed back Harshit Rana after a lengthy injury layoff. The pacer had established himself as a regular in India’s white-ball plans before a knee injury sidelined him ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Young fast bowler Prince Yadav has earned his maiden T20I call-up after impressive performances across domestic and franchise cricket. He has also been included in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming Afghanistan series.
Elsewhere, leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has been preferred over Kuldeep Yadav, while Rinku Singh misses out as the selectors make room for Sooryavanshi.
Hardik, Bumrah Rested
Star all-rounder Hardik Pandya and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah have been rested for the UK tour.
According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, Hardik is currently completing rehabilitation and will undergo a final fitness assessment before being cleared for international cricket.
Bumrah’s exclusion is part of a workload-management plan aimed at keeping India’s premier fast bowler fresh for major assignments later in the year.
