Flydubai Mid-Air Attack: How Indian Captain Smit Machchhar Helped Avert Disaster

Indian aviation captain Smit Machchhar has been hailed for his courage and presence of mind after a violent attack inside the cockpit of a flydubai passenger jet left the aircraft in a steep dive over Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar was reportedly stabbed by his Omani co-pilot while operating a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Despite being seriously injured, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and off-duty crew members to enter and help regain control of the Boeing 737 MAX 8.

The aircraft, carrying 184 passengers, was eventually diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. Machchhar was taken to hospital and underwent surgery. The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia said he was in stable condition.

Attack Sends Plane Into Steep Dive

The incident occurred around two and a half hours after the flight took off from Dubai.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was cruising at approximately 33,000 feet over Saudi airspace when the Omani co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar inside the cockpit.

Passenger accounts and information from Israeli authorities indicate that the attack left the captain injured and the aircraft in a dangerous descent. Flightradar24 data showed the plane falling from around 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in roughly a minute.

The extreme manoeuvre reportedly caused the aircraft’s rudder to tear away.

Machchhar nevertheless managed to unlock the cockpit door. His decision allowed people outside the flight deck to intervene at a critical moment.

Passengers Step In to Save the Flight

Several passengers and off-duty crew members reportedly rushed into the cockpit after the door was opened.

Among them was an Israeli plumber who helped pull the aircraft out of its dive. According to reports, he had learned basic knowledge of aircraft controls from watching aviation documentaries.

Another passenger, a dentist, attended to Machchhar’s injuries and helped control his bleeding.

Meanwhile, other passengers reportedly restrained the attacker with earphone cords. An off-duty pilot then took control of the aircraft and guided it to a safe landing at Tabuk.

The sequence of events has since drawn widespread attention because of the combination of the captain’s actions and the passengers’ intervention during the emergency.

Israeli Officials Call Captain a Hero

Machchhar has received praise from senior officials in both Israel and India.

Former Israeli government spokesperson Elon Levy said the captain’s actions prevented a potentially devastating attack.

“Without him, we would have had a mass casualty terror attack, no doubt,” Levy was quoted as saying by ANI. He added that the incident could have become “Israel’s 9/11”.

Israeli Ambassador to India Reuven Azar also credited Machchhar with helping save the 184 people aboard the aircraft.

“Due to the courage and resolve of Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, 184 passengers were saved,” Azar said, adding that the aircraft could have crashed if the captain had not opened the cockpit door.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Machchhar’s actions as an “amazing act of heroism” in interviews with Fox News and CNN.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry separately called the Indian captain a “hero”, saying he fought back after being attacked in the cockpit.

PM Modi Praises Machchhar’s Courage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the captain’s actions, describing them as an example of “remarkable patience, presence of mind, and courage”.

Speaking at an event, Modi referred to Netanyahu’s assessment of the incident and said, “an Indian saved us from another 9/11”.

Modi said he had spoken with Machchhar’s father Bhupendra, mother Geeta and wife Sonal and that the pilot was receiving treatment.

“The entire world is proud of him today,” Modi said, while urging people to pray for Machchhar’s recovery and long life.

Captain Has Nearly 10,000 Flying Hours

Machchhar is an experienced commercial pilot with more than 13 years in aviation and around 9,750 flying hours.

Before joining flydubai, he spent about 11 years with SpiceJet as a Line Training Captain.

His former instructors and acquaintances have described him as disciplined and composed.

Philip Kean, head of the New Zealand flight school where Machchhar received his training, described the aircraft’s survival during the extreme descent as “miraculous”.

US President Donald Trump also praised Boeing for the structural performance of the 737 MAX, saying the aircraft had endured forces and strain far beyond what it was designed to withstand.

Mumbai Friends Recall His Calm Nature

Back in Mumbai, where Machchhar previously lived, friends and neighbours expressed relief after learning that he had survived the attack.

Childhood friend Prateek Gandhi told PTI that Machchhar had been calm and composed since he was young.

Neighbour Janit Shah also praised the captain’s instinctive response during the emergency, referring to the role of “muscle memory” developed through years of flying.

Machchhar is currently recovering at a Saudi hospital following surgery.

Why Did the Co-Pilot Attack?

The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

Israeli authorities have confirmed that the Omani co-pilot is in Saudi custody. Israeli investigators are expected to participate in questioning the suspect following discussions involving Netanyahu and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Investigators are examining whether the incident was terrorism-related, a lone-wolf attack or connected to a wider organisation.

Netanyahu said it was too early to determine whether Iran had any involvement. Trump, who said he had discussed the incident with Netanyahu, described the co-pilot as possibly a “terrorist” or “whack job”.

The episode has renewed questions about cockpit security, crew screening, pilot background checks and safeguards against threats originating from within the flight crew.

Flydubai has temporarily suspended flights to and from Israel while authorities investigate the attack and reconstruct the events that unfolded aboard the aircraft.
