‘Never Been Closer’: Iran Signals Breakthrough in Talks With US
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations with the United States, saying the two sides are closer than ever to finalising an agreement aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East.
In a post on X, Araghchi said the proposed “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” — named after the Pakistani capital that hosted earlier rounds of US-Iran talks — was on the verge of being concluded. “The Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has never been closer,” he wrote, while urging media organisations to avoid speculating about the contents of the agreement before it is formally completed.
Araghchi said details of the understanding would be shared publicly once the process reaches its conclusion, reiterating Tehran’s commitment to a transparent approach. His comments come amid increasing signs that diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran may be nearing a breakthrough, even as differences remain over several key issues.
The Iranian minister’s remarks also followed reports in sections of the Iranian media claiming to reveal details of the proposed accord. Those reports drew a sharp response from US President Donald Trump, who rejected the purported leaks.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump said the reports were inaccurate and insisted they bore no resemblance to the terms agreed upon by negotiators. The exchange highlights both the progress and sensitivities surrounding the talks, with officials on both sides appearing eager to manage expectations until a final agreement is formally announced.
