Kolkata RG Kar Hospital Lift Tragedy: Man Dies; Five Detained
Arup Bandopadhyay died after being trapped for over an hour in an elevator at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. Following the incident, Tala police detained five individuals for questioning in connection with his death.
Police Action
An FIR was registered under sections related to culpable homicide, based on a complaint by Arup’s father, Amal Bandopadhyay. Investigations are ongoing to determine both the circumstances of the accident and any administrative lapses at the hospital.
Injuries and Post-Mortem
The preliminary post-mortem report revealed that Arup suffered fractures in his ribs, hands, and legs, along with ruptures in the lungs, heart, and liver—injuries that ultimately caused his death.
How the Tragedy Occurred
According to hospital officials and the victim’s family:
Arup was trapped when the elevator malfunctioned.
No operator or supporting staff were present.
The elevator moved unpredictably after a button was pressed.
Arup and two others tried to exit, but he got stuck between the elevator and the wall due to the collapsible gate.
Saptarshi Chattopadhyay, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, acknowledged administrative lapses, citing the absence of staff during the incident.
Background on RG Kar Hospital
The hospital has previously made national headlines:
In August 2024, a female doctor was raped and murdered on the premises. Investigations revealed financial irregularities she may have uncovered.
Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar and accused of masterminding the fraud, was arrested by the CBI and is currently in jail.
Authorities continue to investigate Arup Bandopadhyay’s death, examining both technical failures in the elevator and hospital administrative lapses.
