London Climate Event on Extreme Heat Cancelled After Heatwave Warning
A climate change event focused on tackling extreme heat was cancelled in London after soaring temperatures and a red weather warning made it unsafe to proceed, highlighting the growing impact of heatwaves across the United Kingdom.
The event, Extreme Heat: Improving Governance and Strengthening Action Around the World, was scheduled to take place on Wednesday at the Shaw Library of the London School of Economics as part of London Climate Action Week.
However, organisers decided to cancel the gathering after forecasts suggested temperatures could approach 40°C in parts of England and Wales. In a statement posted on LinkedIn, the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance said the venue was not equipped to handle such extreme conditions.
“Our London Climate Action Week event on extreme heat has been cancelled… due to extreme heat,” the organisation said. It noted that, like many buildings in London, the venue lacked cooling systems and could not guarantee comfortable or safe conditions for speakers and attendees.
The organisers apologised to participants and urged people in London to take precautions amid the ongoing heatwave.
UK Swelters Under Intense Heatwave
The cancellation comes as Britain faces one of its hottest spells of the year. The Met Office has warned that temperatures could exceed 37°C in the shade, with some areas forecast to see highs of between 38°C and 40°C.
The extreme weather has disrupted transport services across the country. Rail operators imposed speed restrictions on several routes over fears that tracks could warp or buckle in the intense heat, leading to delays and cancellations.
Passengers were advised to travel only if absolutely necessary as the transport network struggled to cope with the conditions.
Hospitals Under Pressure
The heatwave has also put additional strain on healthcare services.
Several hospitals in England were forced to cancel patient appointments as emergency departments dealt with rising demand linked to the hot weather. Health officials warned that pressure on the system could increase further if temperatures continue to climb in the coming days.
A Symbolic Cancellation
The cancellation of an event dedicated to discussing the risks posed by extreme heat has drawn attention because it reflects the very challenge the conference aimed to address. Scientists have repeatedly warned that climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, longer-lasting and more intense, posing increasing risks to public health, infrastructure and urban life.
For many observers, the decision to call off a conference on extreme heat because of extreme heat itself served as a stark reminder of how climate-related challenges are becoming an immediate reality rather than a future concern.
