Lovlina Borgohain marked her 29th birthday with a landmark achievement, clinching her maiden Asian Games gold medal in the women’s 75kg boxing category.
The Indian boxer defeated China’s Ziyi Bao by unanimous decision in the final, producing a composed performance to secure the top prize. The victory also made Lovlina the first Indian woman boxer since Mary Kom in 2014 to win an Asian Games gold medal.
Lovlina entered the final having already made history as the first Indian woman boxer to reach back-to-back Asian Games finals. After winning silver in Hangzhou, she was determined to go one step further this time and convert her second successive final appearance into gold.
HOW THE FIGHT UNFOLDED
Lovlina used her height and reach effectively from the opening bell, landing early punches on Bao before moving into the clinch. Bao, who arrived with an unbeaten amateur record and a 14-bout winning streak, gradually settled and responded with powerful body shots.
As the opening round progressed, Bao began closing the distance and forcing Lovlina to defend. Despite the pressure, Lovlina’s cleaner work earned her the round, with three of the five judges scoring it in her favour.
Bao increased the tempo in the second round, constantly moving forward and throwing combinations. Lovlina relied on her jab and hooks and looked to control the distance rather than engage in prolonged exchanges.
The Chinese boxer managed to pin Lovlina near the ropes with a jab, but the Indian responded with a series of punches towards the end of the round. Her finishing burst impressed the judges, who awarded her the round 4-1.
With the gold medal within touching distance, Lovlina adopted a more cautious approach in the final round. She focused on defence and movement, forcing Bao to take greater risks as she chased a way back into the contest.
Bao attempted to land heavier punches, but Lovlina stayed composed and protected her lead through the final three minutes.
When the judges’ decision was announced, the Indian camp erupted in celebration. Lovlina hugged her corner and soaked in the moment as she secured her first Asian Games gold medal — and a memorable birthday gift in the process.
