Manpreet Singh Ruled Out of Asian Champions Trophy, Vivek Sagar Prasad Named Replacement

India have suffered a setback ahead of the Asian Champions Trophy after experienced midfielder Manpreet Singh was ruled out of the tournament due to a calf injury sustained during a training session. Vivek Sagar Prasad has been brought into the squad as his replacement.

India captain Harmanpreet Singh confirmed the development at a captains’ press conference in Jalandhar on Monday, just a day before the hosts begin their campaign against Bangladesh.

Manpreet’s injury comes at a crucial stage as India prepare to defend their Asian Champions Trophy crown on home turf. The competition also marks the return of international hockey to Punjab after a gap of 17 years, making it a special occasion for several members of the Indian squad.

VIVEK SAGAR PRASAD JOINS THE SQUAD
Vivek Sagar Prasad will take over Manpreet’s place in the team, strengthening India’s midfield options ahead of a challenging tournament involving six nations. The playmaker has established himself as a reliable member of the Indian side and will be expected to contribute as the team begins its title defence.

India’s schedule starts with a clash against Bangladesh on Tuesday. The hosts will subsequently face China on October 29, Japan on October 30, Malaysia on November 1 and South Korea on November 2.

The four highest-placed teams in the league phase will advance to the semifinals on November 4, while the final is scheduled to be played in Mohali on November 5.

India enter the tournament as five-time champions and defending title-holders. The team will also draw confidence from its Asian Games gold-medal triumph, with several players from that successful group retained for the upcoming competition.

However, Manpreet’s absence will deprive India of an experienced midfielder whose presence has been valuable in the team’s build-up and overall play. The coaching staff will need to adjust its combinations to maintain stability in the middle of the pitch.

INDIA TARGET SIXTH ASIAN CHAMPIONS TROPHY TITLE
Playing in Punjab adds extra significance to the tournament for the Indian team, with several players set to perform in front of their families and local supporters.

Harmanpreet Singh will lead the side alongside Punjab-born players, including Jugraj Singh, Jarmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Dilpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh. The home crowd is expected to provide additional motivation as India pursue another continental title.

Chief coach Craig Fulton has also expressed enthusiasm about competing on home soil, highlighting the value of playing in front of Indian supporters.

India will face stiff competition from Malaysia, while Japan and South Korea are also expected to pose significant challenges. With matches scheduled at short intervals, squad rotation, recovery and tactical adjustments could play an important role in determining the outcome.

Despite the injury setback, India will aim to start strongly against Bangladesh and build momentum throughout the competition. The team’s immediate priority will be to adapt to Manpreet’s absence and maintain its push for a record-extending sixth Asian Champions Trophy crown.
