The death sentence of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, who was convicted in a 2017 murder case in Yemen, has been officially overturned.

The office of India’s Grand Mufti, Kanthapuram A.P. Abubakar Musliyar, announced on Monday. The decision follows months of intensive diplomatic efforts and a crucial high-level meeting in Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, where authorities resolved to cancel the sentence entirely. The death penalty had previously been under temporary suspension.

“The death sentence of Nimisha Priya, which was earlier suspended, has now been completely overturned following a high-level meeting in Sanaa,” the Grand Mufti’s office said in a statement.
