One Dead, Hundreds Arrested as PSG Celebrations Descend Into Chaos Across Paris

A night that began with celebration ended in violence across Paris as unrest broke out following Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph, leaving one person dead, hundreds under arrest and large parts of the French capital damaged.

As fans flooded the streets to celebrate PSG’s European success, authorities struggled to contain widespread disorder that saw vehicles torched, shops vandalised and clashes erupt between supporters and police.

From Celebration to Disorder

Shortly after the final whistle, thousands of supporters gathered across Paris, particularly along the Champs-Élysées, where scenes of jubilation initially unfolded. However, celebrations soon escalated into unrest, with footage showing flares being ignited, vehicles set on fire and storefronts damaged.

Authorities reported that more than 260 cars were burned during the night, while several businesses near Parc des Princes, PSG’s home stadium, suffered damage.

Police also reported attempts by groups of supporters to breach security perimeters around the stadium, leading to confrontations with officers deployed in the area.

Massive Security Presence Fails to Prevent Unrest

French authorities had anticipated potential trouble and launched one of the country’s largest football-related security operations. More than 22,000 police officers were deployed nationwide, including around 8,000 in Paris alone.

Transport restrictions were imposed throughout the city, with several metro stations closed and public transport services modified to limit crowd movement. Despite the measures, disturbances broke out in multiple locations across the capital.

Law enforcement officers used tear gas to disperse crowds, while dozens of fireworks and flares were confiscated during the operation.

Hundreds Detained, Officers Injured

Officials confirmed that over 780 people were arrested during the overnight unrest. Seven police officers were reported injured while responding to incidents across the city.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez condemned the violence, saying those responsible had tarnished what should have been a moment of celebration for football fans.

Victory Parade to Proceed Despite Violence

Despite the overnight chaos, PSG’s official victory celebrations are expected to continue. The club’s players are scheduled to participate in a parade through Paris before attending a reception hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The celebrations are set to pass near the Eiffel Tower, where large crowds are again expected to gather.

Renewed Debate Over Football-Related Violence

The unrest quickly drew reactions from political figures, including Marine Le Pen, who criticised the violence and questioned why major sporting celebrations repeatedly result in public disorder.

The latest incidents have reignited concerns over security at large-scale football celebrations in France. Similar scenes were witnessed after previous major PSG victories, raising questions about crowd management and the challenges authorities face when handling massive public gatherings.

While PSG supporters celebrated another historic European title, the night’s legacy was overshadowed by violence, destruction and tragedy that unfolded far from the football pitch.
