Pete Hegseth dodges Trump mental fitness question, response goes viral

Pete Hegseth declined to directly answer a question on Donald Trump’s mental fitness during a tense congressional hearing, instead defending the president in remarks that have since gone viral.

During an exchange on Capitol Hill, Democratic lawmaker Sara Jacobs asked whether Trump was “mentally stable enough” to serve as commander-in-chief. Hegseth avoided a direct response, countering by asking if similar concerns had been raised about Joe Biden during his time in office.

“I won’t engage in that level of disparagement,” Hegseth said, adding that Trump is an “incredible commander-in-chief who puts our troops first.” The clip of the exchange quickly gained traction across social media platforms.

Focus on record defence budget
The hearing was part of broader discussions before the US Senate Armed Services Committee and House panels on the administration’s proposed $1.5 trillion defence budget for 2027.

Hegseth described the plan as a major overhaul aimed at strengthening military readiness, increasing investment in advanced capabilities, and improving conditions for service members. The proposal includes a 7% pay rise for junior enlisted troops and upgrades to military housing infrastructure.

Debate amid rising tensions
The scrutiny comes as tensions involving Iran continue to shape US foreign policy discourse. Trump has faced criticism for a series of late-night social media posts, including one warning of catastrophic consequences if Iran does not meet US demands.

He also drew backlash for sharing an AI-generated image portraying himself in a Christ-like form, which he later deleted while defending its intent. The viral exchange has added to ongoing political debate in Washington over leadership, rhetoric, and national security priorities.
