Paris Saint-Germain defender Achraf Hakimi has been crowned African Footballer of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards in Rabat, beating finalists Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen.
The 27-year-old becomes the first Moroccan winner of the prize since Mustapha Hadji in 1998, capping a season defined by standout performances for club and country. Hakimi was instrumental in PSG’s treble-winning campaign, lifting the Ligue 1 title, UEFA Champions League, and French Super Cup. Although PSG fell short in the FIFA Club World Cup final against Chelsea, Hakimi’s impact throughout the season solidified his reputation as one of Africa’s most influential players.
Chosen by CAF’s technical committee alongside African media, players and coaches, Hakimi said he was honoured by the recognition. “I am proud to win such a prestigious trophy,” he said.
Hakimi played a decisive role in PSG’s Champions League victory, notably scoring the opener in their 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the final. He has also remained central to Morocco’s build-up to the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Atlas Lions aim to win their first continental title since 1976.
His Afcon participation, however, remains uncertain. Hakimi is recovering from a severe ankle sprain suffered in PSG’s Champions League match against Bayern Munich earlier in November. Accepting his award with his injured foot protected, he remained optimistic: “We will do our best to win the Afcon trophy. I want to thank my physiotherapists and everyone supporting me in this difficult period.”
Morocco dominated the awards night. Ghizlane Chebbak was named Women’s African Player of the Year after finishing as top scorer at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Yassine Bounou won Best Goalkeeper, while Morocco’s U-20 team claimed Men’s National Team of the Year. Watford talent Othmane Maamma secured Best Young Male Player, and Doha El Madani was named Best Young Women’s Player.
Beyond Morocco, Cape Verde coach Bubista won Men’s Coach of the Year after steering his nation to qualification for the 2026 World Cup. “We are a small country, but we have a big heart,” he said.
