Iran President Reportedly Left Wondering If He Had Really Met Mojtaba Khamenei

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reportedly left a secret meeting with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei uncertain whether the person he had spoken to was actually the country’s top leader, according to a report by Iran International.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report claimed the meeting took place inside a vehicle with heavily tinted windows at an undisclosed location in Tehran. The surroundings were allegedly so dark that Pezeshkian could not see the person he was meeting and later questioned whether the voice he heard was indeed Khamenei’s.

The interaction reportedly lasted only a few minutes, after which the president departed without being allowed to shake hands with the Supreme Leader.

Secret Meeting Allegedly Arranged After Repeated Requests

According to the report, Pezeshkian had repeatedly sought a meeting with Khamenei and even threatened to resign amid disagreements over national policy before the Supreme Leader’s office agreed to an audience. Instead of the customary meeting at the leader’s residence, Pezeshkian was reportedly driven to a secret location by his security team and then transferred to another vehicle where the alleged meeting took place.

Sources quoted by the publication claimed the president considered the encounter humiliating and later sought another meeting at Khamenei’s residence, a request that was reportedly rejected.

Public Remarks Tell a Different Story

The reported account differs sharply from Pezeshkian’s public comments in May, when he said he had spent nearly two-and-a-half hours with Mojtaba Khamenei in a “cordial atmosphere.” The Iranian president has also acknowledged that communication with the Supreme Leader has become increasingly difficult.

“It is very difficult to communicate with him at the moment, but his presence is a very great source of strength for us,” Pezeshkian was quoted as saying by AFP.

At the same time, he defended Khamenei, saying his interactions with the Supreme Leader had been marked by “kindness and very sound logic,” while accusing critics of presenting a distorted image of him.

Reports Claim Growing Tensions at the Top

The Iran International report also claimed Pezeshkian had threatened resignation after complaining that his government had been sidelined on key foreign policy and national security decisions.

Separately, Israeli media outlets reported that Khamenei later issued a “final ultimatum” to the president and backed Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Ahmad Vahidi on major strategic decisions, further reducing Pezeshkian’s influence. These claims have not been independently verified.

Supreme Leader Remains Out of Public View

Mojtaba Khamenei has not made a public appearance for months since succeeding his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His messages have largely been released in written form and read by Iranian state media.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said in July that only a limited number of people had met the Supreme Leader during this period. Adding to the speculation, US President Donald Trump recently claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei was “90 per cent gone,” without providing evidence for the assertion.

The Iranian presidency and the office of the Supreme Leader have not publicly responded to the reported details of the alleged secret meeting.
