IPL 2027: Mumbai Indians Bring In Robin Uthappa, T Dilip And Two Others In Major Coaching Shake-Up
Mumbai Indians have announced a significant overhaul of their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027, appointing former India batter Robin Uthappa, New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan, T Dilip and Dhawal Kulkarni to important positions. The changes come as the five-time champions look to rebuild their campaign after failing to qualify for the playoffs in the 2026 season.
The new coaching team will work under head coach Kieron Pollard, who assumed charge following Mahela Jayawardene’s departure. The franchise has assigned specialised responsibilities to all four new appointments, with Uthappa taking charge of batting, McClenaghan overseeing bowling, Dilip handling fielding and Kulkarni focusing on the development of young bowlers.
Three of the four coaches have previously represented Mumbai Indians in the IPL, making their return to the franchise in new roles.
Robin Uthappa Returns To Mumbai Indians As Batting Coach
Uthappa is set for a return to Mumbai Indians after nearly two decades. He represented the franchise during the inaugural IPL season in 2008, scoring 320 runs in 14 matches.
The former India batter went on to enjoy a successful IPL career, accumulating 4,952 runs in 205 matches. He won the Orange Cap in 2014 after scoring 660 runs for Kolkata Knight Riders and later helped Chennai Super Kings secure the IPL title in 2021.
Uthappa was also part of India’s squad that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. His experience across international cricket and multiple IPL franchises will now be utilised in Mumbai’s batting department.
Mitchell McClenaghan And Dhawal Kulkarni Take Up Bowling Responsibilities
McClenaghan will lead Mumbai’s bowling unit after previously playing an important role in the franchise’s successful IPL campaigns.
The New Zealand left-arm pacer represented Mumbai Indians between 2015 and 2019, taking 71 wickets in 56 matches. He was part of the team’s title-winning campaigns in 2015, 2017 and 2019 and remained associated with the wider squad during its 2020 triumph.
Dhawal Kulkarni, another former Mumbai player, has been appointed development bowling coach. He represented the franchise across two separate periods, from 2008 to 2013 and again between 2020 and 2021.
Kulkarni finished his IPL career with 86 wickets in 92 matches and was part of Mumbai’s championship-winning squads in 2013 and 2020. His new assignment will involve identifying and nurturing young Indian bowling talent while providing players with continued technical support.
T Dilip Joins MI After Stint With Indian Cricket Team
T Dilip’s appointment marks another important addition to Mumbai’s coaching setup. The former India fielding coach joins the franchise after the BCCI decided not to renew his contract with the national team.
His final assignment with India came during the 2025 tour of England. During his time with the national side, Dilip was associated with the coaching group for India’s 2024 and 2026 T20 World Cup triumphs and the 2025 Champions Trophy victory.
He will now be responsible for improving Mumbai Indians’ fielding standards and bringing his experience of working with international players to the franchise.
Coaching Changes Follow Multiple Departures
Mumbai Indians’ latest recruitment comes after several changes behind the scenes. Bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, along with fielding coach Carl Hopkinson, have departed from the setup.
The franchise also underwent a leadership change after Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as head coach. Kieron Pollard, who previously served as batting coach, has since taken over the position.
With four new appointments, Mumbai have assembled a coaching group combining former franchise players and coaches with experience at the international level.
The immediate focus will be on addressing the shortcomings that affected the team’s 2026 campaign. Mumbai will hope the revamped support staff can strengthen its batting and bowling departments, develop emerging talent and help the franchise return to playoff contention in IPL 2027.
