Rahul Gandhi’s Message to Congress Youth Amid Neha Bora Row: ‘If You Want Credit, You’re in the Wrong Party’

Amid reported resentment among sections of the Congress’s student and youth wings over the prominence given to Left student leader Neha Bora during the Opposition’s October 12 march to the Supreme Court, Rahul Gandhi has reportedly cautioned young party workers against seeking personal credit for their contributions.

At a meeting with Indian Youth Congress (IYC), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and Seva Dal leaders and workers at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, the Leader of Opposition is learnt to have said that those who joined the party to seek recognition were in the “wrong party”.

The meeting was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretary (organisation) K.C. Venugopal, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, IYC president Uday Bhanu Chib and NSUI president Vinod Jakhar.

A Congress leader present at the meeting told The Indian Express that Gandhi reminded the young workers that the party had contributed to the country for decades without seeking credit for every achievement. He reportedly urged them not to expect personal recognition within the organisation either.

Gandhi’s remarks came amid questions from some NSUI members over Bora’s prominent position during the march, which was organised to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Rahul Gandhi Emphasises Sacrifice and Resilience

Gandhi reportedly told the gathering that the hardships and alleged police excesses faced by party workers during recent protests would strengthen them rather than weaken their resolve.

Using the example of injuries sustained during demonstrations, he is learnt to have said that a broken leg should not be treated merely as a medical emergency but also as a badge of honour carried in the heart.

He also highlighted the role of the IYC and NSUI in developing leadership qualities, discipline, sacrifice, resilience and the courage to stand up for what is right.

According to a participant, Gandhi encouraged young workers to make the most of their time in these organisations by learning and preparing themselves for greater responsibilities in the future.

The remarks came as the Congress continued its campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demanded accountability from the Election Commission.

Priyanka Gandhi’s Advice to Youth Leaders

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also addressed the gathering, stressing that the conduct and behaviour of young workers reflect the values of the organisation they represent.

She reportedly described the youth as the strength and future of the Congress, adding that the senior leadership draws support from their commitment.

Vadra also reminded the workers that they represented the entire party, not just themselves, and urged them to remain mindful of the responsibilities that come with their positions.

Why Neha Bora’s Prominence Has Triggered Questions

The reported unease within sections of the NSUI followed the decision to give Bora a seat on the same bus as the Gandhi family and other senior Congress leaders during the October 12 Opposition march.

Some Congress leaders have questioned the prominence accorded to former Left student activists who join the party to pursue political careers. Others have raised concerns about the party’s engagement with Left-leaning political groups, particularly as the Congress seeks to expand its appeal among voters with different ideological preferences.

The debate has brought questions of internal recognition, leadership opportunities and political strategy into focus. However, the reported concerns do not necessarily reflect the views of the entire student or youth organisation.

Kharge Praises Young Workers’ Role in Democracy

After the meeting, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge underlined the importance of young people in shaping India’s political future.

In a post on X, Kharge said the party’s youth and frontal organisations remained committed to holding the government accountable, defending democratic rights and safeguarding the credibility of institutions.

He added that their courage and conviction strengthened the Congress’s resolve to protect democracy.

The meeting underscored the leadership’s emphasis on discipline, sacrifice and collective responsibility as the party addresses reported differences within its student and youth ranks over representation and political recognition.
