US President Donald Trump intensified his criticism of Norway on Sunday, branding the country with an offensive slur and saying Norwegian immigrants were unwelcome in America because he had been denied the Nobel Peace Prize.
Trump made the controversial remarks during a campaign rally in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of next week’s midterm elections.
While discussing immigration, Trump linked recent unrest in France to the arrival of immigrants and said the United States would accept people from some countries but not from Norway. He attributed his position to the Nobel Committee’s decision not to honour him with its Peace Prize.
“Because I didn’t get the Nobel Prize … So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” Trump said, before describing Norway as a “shit house country”. He has previously used similar derogatory language for countries including Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
Despite his remarks, there was no indication that the administration was considering any new official policy aimed specifically at Norwegian immigrants.
Trump’s comments came despite Norway’s strong economic standing. According to International Monetary Fund data, the country is among the world’s wealthiest nations in terms of GDP per capita. Its sovereign wealth fund recorded a historic profit of 1.75 trillion Norwegian crowns, worth around $184.3 billion, in the first six months of 2026.
Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a representative of the Norwegian Nobel Committee did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside normal office hours.
Trump has repeatedly voiced displeasure over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Earlier this month, he described the decision as an “indelible stain” on Norway, underscoring his continuing anger over the award.
