‘You’re Not Supposed To Say That’: Jaishankar’s Quip to Finnish FM Steals the Show During Finland Visit

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Finland generated discussions on defence cooperation, energy security and global geopolitics, but it was a brief moment of humour with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen that ended up dominating social media conversations.

The exchange took place during a media interaction after bilateral talks between the two leaders. As the discussion turned to India-Finland cooperation, Valtonen jokingly noted that the two countries had signed “many deals.”

Jaishankar immediately responded with a smile: “You’re not supposed to say that.”

The remark prompted laughter from those present, including Valtonen herself, whose reaction quickly became part of the viral clip shared widely online. Within hours, social media users were praising the candid exchange and highlighting the comfortable rapport between the two ministers.

Viral diplomatic banter

Many users described the interaction as a rare glimpse of humour in international diplomacy. Others noted that Jaishankar’s response reflected the light-hearted atmosphere that occasionally emerges during high-level diplomatic engagements.

The moment stood out precisely because it contrasted with the serious nature of the visit, which focused on issues ranging from European security and defence cooperation to trade and international affairs.

Another one-liner grabs attention

The exchange with Valtonen was not the only occasion on which Jaishankar’s quick wit made headlines during the trip. At a separate discussion attended by UAE Assistant Foreign Minister Lana Nusseibeh, the Emirati diplomat jokingly remarked that it had been “a really quiet time” in her part of the world, referring to the ongoing turbulence in West Asia.

Jaishankar’s response was immediate: “That’s why you came here to Finland.”

The audience burst into laughter, and the clip soon began circulating online, adding to the growing buzz around the minister’s Finland visit.

Finland supports India’s stance on Russian oil

Away from the viral moments, the visit also featured significant conversations on global energy markets and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Speaking during the Kultaranta Talks, Valtonen defended India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, saying New Delhi had acted within the parameters of the oil price cap introduced by Western countries after the outbreak of the war.

“In India’s defence, it has bought oil under the price cap. That was the intention,” she said. Valtonen explained that the mechanism was designed to keep oil flowing into global markets while limiting Russia’s ability to earn excessive profits, rather than completely halting purchases by countries such as India.

Her remarks came as Jaishankar once again defended India’s energy policy, arguing that ensuring affordable energy supplies for its population remains a key national priority.

While the visit addressed several major international issues, it was ultimately the minister’s off-the-cuff remarks and easygoing exchanges with fellow diplomats that attracted the most attention, turning routine diplomatic engagements into some of the week’s most-shared moments online.
