Liverpool’s Diogo Jota Dies in Car Crash, Days After Wedding.

Portugal international and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain, just ten days after his wedding. He was 28. The fatal crash occurred on July 3 along the A-52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria in the Zamora region of northwestern Spain. Jota was travelling with his brother, Andre Filipe, a 26-year-old professional footballer, who also died in the accident.

According to early reports, the two were in a Lamborghini that suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking another vehicle. The car veered off the road and caught fire, killing both men on the spot. The blaze also spread to surrounding vegetation, prompting emergency services from Zamora’s Provincial Council to respond.

The tragedy came just ten days after Jota married Rute Cardoso, his long-time partner, in a ceremony held in Porto on June 22. The couple shared three children.

A Career of Impact
Jota began his professional journey with Paços de Ferreira in Portugal before moving to Atlético Madrid in 2016. His career flourished in England, first with Wolverhampton Wanderers and later with Liverpool, where he became a key figure under managers Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

He won the FA Cup and League Cup with Liverpool and was part of the squad that secured the 2024–25 Premier League title.

On the international stage, Jota earned recognition for his contributions to Portugal’s national team, appearing in major tournaments including Euro 2024. He played in extra time during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League final win over Spain earlier this year.

National and Club Tributes
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) released a statement mourning the loss:

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva. These are irreparable losses. We have lost two champions.”

Liverpool FC also confirmed the news:
“The club has been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC requests privacy for the family, friends, teammates, and staff during this unimaginably difficult time.”

Jota’s sudden passing has left the football world in mourning, with fans, teammates, and clubs across Europe paying tribute to a player celebrated not only for his talent but also for his humility and character.
