Naomi Osaka Overlooks Victoria Mboko After Shock Loss in Canadian Open Final.
Naomi Osaka fell to 18-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko in a stunning upset at the Canadian Open final on Friday, as Mboko claimed her first WTA title on home turf. In her brief post-match speech, Osaka thanked her team, ball kids, organisers, and volunteers but notably did not congratulate Mboko, who idolises the four-time Grand Slam champion.
“I don’t want to take up too much time, so I’ll just say it,” Osaka said. “Thank you to everyone, thank you to my team, thank you to the ball kids, thank you to the organisers and all the volunteers. I hope you had a good night.”
Osaka’s path to the final included wins over Ludmila Samsonova, Jelena Ostapenko, Anastasija Sevastova, Elina Svitolina, and Clara Tauson. However, she was unable to overcome the hometown favorite in front of a passionate crowd, as Mboko secured a memorable victory in her first-ever WTA final.
